All Music Guide - Kelly McCartney
Rarely do albums capture the raw emotion of a live performance, and this 1994 release is no exception. Audiences have been known to become addicted to Danny Peck's intensely powerful live shows, and although Danny Peck doesn't quite capture that experience, it's a nice souvenir and a fine reminder of it. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, a bursting heart, and a zest for words, Peck is a poet by nature who just so happens to be musical as well. A romantic and an activist, his self-created genre (and 1997 follow-up title) "love politico" sums his style up pretty well. He can turn a phrase and float a melody with the best of them, and he offers up no fewer than 14 of his finest tunes which, no doubt, he had a hard time choosing. (In fact, he could have knocked off a couple more to help the album's flow, though that would have made for some tough calls.) On the fairer side of the field, "Lover," "Anyway I Can," "The Beauty Within You," and "Stolen Kisses" are all loving indulgences in the pain and pleasure of personal relationships. As with any great poet, Peck's tales of a lover's passion creep right up to the line of obsession and uncontrollable desire. You may have to listen closely to decide which side of the story you prefer to be on. His fiery side comes out on the more socially conscious "Eight Bodies," "Wake Up Call," and "Black and White." No matter the subject, Peck feels deeply, and he expresses himself with an urgent eloquence. An out of print, very hard to find release, Danny Peck marks a moment in time for an outstanding singer/songwriter who deserves a much larger stage.
