Dans la Louisiane (In Louisiana)

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richard Foss
The sound of the Basin Brothers changed a bit when new accordionist Errol Verret replaced founding member Danny Collet. Collet had co-written tunes with main man Al Berard, while on Dans la Louisiane every cut that isn't traditional is credited solely to Berard. Not surprisingly, Berard's fiddle is higher in the mix and plays more lead lines than in the Basin Brothers' previous albums. Berard is enough of a player and vocalist to justify the focus on his work, and enough of a star that they were now relegated to the status of his backup band. Though the group sounds great here, there is a bit less musical interplay going on. Still, there are some compensations -- new ...

Though the group sounds great here, there is a bit less musical interplay going on. Still, there are some compensations -- new string player Tommy Comeaux came with Verret from the band Beausoleil, and his mandolin and rhythm guitar help give tunes like "Midland Special" a slightly fuller sound. Dans la Louisiane is a fine album, one that shows Al Berard firmly in control of a very good band and justifying his status as a star of Cajun music.
