Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Tom Simone’s translation is simply superb. Of all the translations with which I am familiar, this is the one that is the most faithful to what’s there in the Italian: no frills, no poetic sallies, no choosing a word because it brings the line closer to iambic pentameter -- just unadulterated Dante with good old Anglo-Saxon words and in highly readable prose."

~ Peter Kalkavage, St. John's College

I read the "standard" translation (if I may call it so

I read the "standard" translation (if I may call it so) before reading Mr. Simone's translation and it opened my eyes to the story immensely! The "standard", while beautiful and spectacularly poetic, greatly escapes the comprehension with its overloadedness of high-brow Franco-Latin vocabulary. This translation, by means of utilizing more common words and modern syntax, allows the reader to be fully engaged in the mesmeric tale without having to navigate the rather cumbersome and traitorous waters of high-class antiquated vocabulary.
