    more from this reviewer

    Dante/Gustave Dore

Brilliantly illustrated book. This Dore edition is very well known and this particular publication definitely does it justice.

    Book was shipped broken

When I received the book in the mail, I immediately opened the box, happy to finally have it arrive. Picking it up out of the box, I heard a strange crackling noise. Opening the front cover, I saw that the spine was splitting, separating the cover from the rest of the book.

I took the book back to a local store, where they gave be credit for the book but not shipping. While at the store, I found a leather bound version of the book for a dollar more, so I bought that instead.

    Most Interesting Book I've Read

This edition has a great layout. The brief explanation before you start each canto is nice; though, it would be nice if some of the obscure references in the text had notes in the side margins.

    Attractively Presented

A useful addition to anyone's library or for a thoughtful gife. Contains the Longfellow translation together with Dore"s illustrations. Since I have other translations and editions of this work I was pleased to add this attractive over-sized volume to my library.

    A Masterpiece

This is a literary work of art! While the story, which will remain timeless in its construct and lends even to todays objectivity of religion, this is as close as we can perceive things to be at their extreme. While the illustrations are dynamic they give mention to the phrasing that the 15th cent. text lends to giving you the visual the artist and author envisaged. Superb!

    Great Book

The book is great, but make sure to read it out loud as it tends to make more sense by reading it out loud. The pictures are great, and offer the lines that give the inspiration for the picture.
