Overview

Ireland, 1917. Darcy is a light gray Connemara pony with silver dapples. She's fast and tough, whether she's pulling a load of peat from the bog or riding around the rugged countryside with Shannon McKenna, her human family's eldest daughter. But when Mrs. McKenna needs a doctor, Darcy discovers a skill that will change her and her family's life forever. Like Black Beauty, this moving novel is told in first person from the horse's point of view and includes an appendix full of photos and facts about Connemara ponies and Irish history.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
This novel in the "Horse Diaries" series follows the life of Darcy, a Connemara pony in early 20th-century Ireland. Darcy herself narrates her story, beginning with her birth on the same day another filly is born at a neighboring farm. Darcy and Ciara grow and play together. Their lives are carefree, until the horrible day Ciara is attacked by sea eagles and falls off a cliff to her death. The description of this event is quite graphic and may be disturbing to sensitive young readers. Darcy's narration continues as she is separated from her mother at the age of two years, when she is sold to a farmer. She grows to love Mr. McKenna and his family. Her descriptions present a picture of Irish life as she talks about her work as well as the time she spends with the children, watching them grow. Soon, Darcy is a mother herself and must watch as her young colts are sold, but she understands that life is full of both happy and sad events. A short appendix gives historical information about the Connemara ponies. Black-and-white illustrations make Darcy and her human family come alive for the reader. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
