Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Coretta Scott was a farm child of the Great Depression. With remarkable tenacity and obvious talent, she acquired a college education and training as an opera singer. When she met Martin Luther King, Jr., she immediately connected to his goals and dreams. She had witnessed racial injustice all her life, from her childhood in the south to her education in the north. This is the true story of how she became Dr. King's partner, using her intellect and talent to further the cause of civil rights in America.
Children's Literature
In this biography of civil-rights leader Coretta Scott King, Angela Shelf Medearis has captured to perfection the feeling of a small southern town, and the bewilderment of a child prevented from doing something because she was African-American. Coretta Scott King was born in Alabama in 1927. The schools she went to were segregated, the movies and restaurants and even drinking fountains were either segregated or off limits to African-Americans. The Scott family was not well off, but they owned their own farm and always had "food and fun." Her parents loved their children and wanted them to be well educated and to "try to be somebody." When Coretta Scott married Martin Luther King, Jr., she dreamed with him that some day America would be a place where any child could grow up feeling secure and free. The man was killed, but the dream lives on. This book makes it live for a new generation.
School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-A readable account of the life of Coretta Scott King that emphasizes her participation in the civil rights movement. Based largely on Mrs. King's book My Life with Martin Luther King, Jr. (Holt, 1993), this biography shows her to be a courageous woman who can stand on her own merit, and not just as the wife of one of the world's most well-known men. Black-and-white photographs and well-executed pencil drawings show the subject at various stages of her life. The book concludes with a three-entry list for further reading; two were published in the 1970s and are out of print.-Eunice Weech, M.L. King Elementary School, Urbana, IL
Linda Ward-Callaghan
Using Coretta Scott King's autobiography as her primary source, Medearis fashions a concise, engaging biography for young readers. It charts the milestones in King's life from her early ambitions to be an opera singer through her marriage, her involvement in the civil rights movement, and her continuation of her husband's work after his death. Sensitive to many young readers' naivete about history, Medearis works into the narrative information on segregation, Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott, and other key events in the civil rights movement. Illustrated with soft pencil drawings as well as numerous black-and-white photographs, this title makes a fine addition to easy-reading biography collections.
