Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Stephanie R. Pearmain
Third graders Morgan, Charlie, and Aldeen are going to the Fall Fair. Charlie is excited about the big rides, Morgan is nervous but will not admit it to anyone, especially not Charlie or Aldeen. He also plans to enter his homegrown pumpkin in the Perfect Pumpkin contest. Aldeen says rides are boring but she is certain she will win a prize in the art contest. Trying to prove her strength, Aldeen attempts to lift Morgan's pumpkin. She lifts it up but then drops it, leaving it smashed on one side. So, it gets entered as a pie instead of a perfect pumpkin. At the fair, Morgan gets talked into going on the Asteroid Belt ride with Aldeen. It is a wild ride that keeps them screaming and leaves them holding onto each other for what feels like survival. Their other friends are in awe that they braved the ride—even Charlie who, it turns out, will not dare to get near it. Neither Morgan nor Aldeen admits the fear or the holding on part. Aldeen's artwork does get a ribbon, as does Morgan's pie. This fun "First Novel" is filled with laughs and excitement as the characters adventure through the Fall Fair. The illustrations are great black-and-white sketches that really bring out the characters. Reviewer: Stephanie R. Pearmain
