Civil War Book Review
Told in flowing and provocative narrative style, Ayers chronicles the Civil War in Louisiana. The book covers December 1860 through the end of the war, examing topics such as the South's unforeseen victory during the Red River campaign. Complete with bibliography, this text is a welcome addition to the body of works on Louisiana history.

    Loved 'Dark & Bloody Ground'

I enjoyed reading 'Dark & Bloody Ground' by Thomas Ayres. Mr. Ayres writes history with the ease of a natural storyteller. It is certainly some of the best work done on General Richard Taylor who led his ragged little Rebel army to victory at Mansfield. Mr. Ayres paints a vivid picture of the battle for Louisiana's Red River region and shines the spotlight on some forgotten heros. Well done!

An Excellent History of the Civil War in Louisiana!

The Civil War in Louisiana has always been an interesting but confusing subject and the full story has never been told...until now. In 'Dark and Bloody Ground,' Thomas Ayres presents a clear and entertaining picture of the Union occupation and the Confedrate defense of Louisiana. More importantly this book is such an enjoyable read...filled with insight on the colorful personalities on both sides and what motivated them. General Richard Taylor is finally given the attention he has long deserved. I enjoyed Thomas Ayres' book, 'That's Not In My American History Book,' but 'Dark and Bloody Ground' is even better!

The Civil War in Louisiana and Texas

A well researched work centered on the contributions of LA and TX troops to the initial phases of the war in the East. This is followed by Dick Taylor's assignment to return to LA and defend the Trans-Mississippi states. Colorful descriptions of characters taken from letters and reports. Finally, a book that gives Richard Taylor his due - in any other segment of the war, he would have rivaled Stonewall Jackson in legend. No fluff, all good stuff.
