A truly moving story comes together through poetry and the art of words
Dark Currents by Arthur Temple, illustrates a life that few people will ever experience. The author takes us through so much sadness, page by page; and each page more painful than the one before. I was embarrassed to feel fortunate not to have experienced such anguish knowing that the writer obviously had. Through poetry and the art of words, Arthur opens his wounds for us to examine. But these are lessons that no one should pass on learning. You feel the sorrow in the helpless child, taught to blame himself for what was wrong with everyone else around him.
I wanted so much for him to find some meaning in it all, but as an existentialist I know full well there is none. It is a stark lesson in the cruelty human beings are capable of inflicting on others. Even those he thought he could trust let him down. For most of us there are safe places, but for Arthur there were none, until he wrote about his wife who was the one true gift in his life. He is finally gifted with something that all of the abusive people in his past will never have.
When I was 17 years old I worked in a nursing home on a floor with patients who were suffering the most. I thought about how everyone should work here so they could gain a perspective on life that would be impossible otherwise. This is how I feel about this book. You will be surprised about how deep the abyss can get and understand what little right you have to complain about anything. You can't help but be moved by the story that comes together through the pieces.
In a short piece called, 'Defiance', Arthur writes, "I never heard a kind word spoken to me in this lifetime, save my wife." Well, Arthur let me tell you; it takes courage to pour your deepest feelings on to a page, and your honesty enriches.
I strongly recommend reading Dark Currents. I guarantee it will touch you.
