Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
To save Merlin, Jack and Annie know that they must continue their search for the secrets of true happiness. What they don't understand is how being transported to a tiny desert island in the remotest part of the ocean will help them on their quest. A surprising series of adventures, however, propels them toward a solution -- and a sea monster! Another delightful teaching tool by master of the craft Mary Pope Osborne.
Children's Literature
Annie and Jack are back with another "Magic Tree House" adventure back in time—this time finding themselves aboard the HMS Challenger, a British ship embarked on a voyage of scientific discovery during the 1870s. Fans of the series will certainly enjoy this new adventure, full of rough weather, a giant octopus, and superstitious sailors, and many young readers will be intrigued to learn how much scientists did not know in the 19th Century. As with all book in this series, however, this new entry will appeal much more to children who prefer to read nonfiction, than to those who prefer strong character development and the exploration of relationships. This book is part of a sub-set of the "Magic Tree House" series; it is a "Merlin Mission" book, a little longer than the original books, with more complex vocabulary, meant for young readers who are ready to graduate up from beginning chapter books. This "Stepping Stone Book" story seems a bit more contrived than some in the series, particularly the personification of the octopus, but it is still a good choice for youngsters who enjoy taking in facts with their fiction. Meet the Author

Mary Pope Osborne
Mary Pope Osborne

MARY POPE OSBORNE is the author of the New York Times number one bestselling Magic Tree House series. She and her husband, writer Will Osborne (author of Magic Tree House: The Musical), live in northwestern Connecticut with their three dogs. Ms. Osborne is also the coauthor of the companion Magic Tree House Fact Trackers series with Will, and with her sister, Natalie Pope Boyce.

SAL MURDOCCA has illustrated more than 200 children's trade and text books. He is also a librettist for children's opera, a video artist, an avid runner, hiker, and bicyclist, and a teacher of children's illustration at the Parsons School of Design. Sal lives and works in New York with his wife, Nancy.

Biography

Ever since 1992, Mary Pope Osborne has been thrilling kids everywhere with her delightfully exciting Magic Tree House series. The globetrotting escapades of time travelers Jack and Annie are brimming with adventure and magic (not to mention some subtly placed lessons on history and geography). With a life like Osborne's, it's only natural that she would be capable of bringing such wondrous stories to life.

Osborne was brought up in a military family, and her parents' work led to a lifestyle marked by constant change. "By the time I was 15," she says on randomhouse.com, "I had lived in Oklahoma, Austria, Florida, and four different army posts in Virginia and North Carolina." While many kids would probably feel disoriented by such constant change, Osborne wouldn't have had it any other way. "Moving was never traumatic for me, but staying in one place was. When my dad finally retired to a small town in North Carolina, I nearly went crazy with boredom. I craved the adventure and changing scenery of our military life."

And adventure is exactly what Osborne got! After college, she embarked on a series of daring treks across the globe that would surely give Jack and Annie a run for their money. "For a while I camped in a cave on the island of Crete," she said. "Then I joined up with a small band of European young people heading to 'The East.' We traveled through 11 Asian countries and nearly lost our lives, first in an earthquake in northern Afghanistan and then in a riot in Kabul."

Following an illness she contracted in Katmandu, Osborne returned home to the U.S. trying her hand at a vast variety of jobs: window dresser, medical assistant, Russian travel consultant, waitress, bartender, and an assistant editor at a children's magazine. Although Osborne had unconsciously moved closer toward her ultimate career, she says that her first attempts at writing seemed to come without warning. "One day, out of the blue, I began writing a story about an 11-year-old girl in the South," she recalls. "The girl was a lot like me, and many of the incidents in the story were similar to happenings in my childhood...it became a young adult novel called Run, Run Fast as You Can. Finally, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up."

She sure did! Since then, Osborne has penned a slew of stories, including picture books, chapter books, middle-grade biographies, and young adult novels; but she is indisputably best known for her wonderful Magic Tree House books, a happy hodge-podge of history and mystery with a time travel theme kids find irresistible. No doubt inspired by Osborne's own highly adventurous life, these exiting expeditions have attracted droves of children and pleased educators by combining compulsively readable storytelling with useful facts about geography and history.

As was written of the series in Children's Literature, "Mary Pope Osborne provides nicely paced excitement for young readers, and there's just enough information mixed in so that children will take away some historical fact along with a sense of accomplishment at having completed a chapter book." As much as Osborne has certainly pleased her readers (not to mention their parents and teachers), perhaps no one is quite as pleased as she. "I'm one of those very lucky people who absolutely loves what they do for a living," she explained. "There is no career better suited to my eccentricities, strengths, and passions than that of a children's book author."

Good To Know

A few fascinating outtakes from our interview with Osborne:

"One of the most defining experiences of my life was traveling overland in an old van through the Middle East and Asia in the early 1970's. One day, when a small group of us were camped in a remote part of northern Afghanistan, we saw a woman riding horseback over the sloping plain. Her long brown hair floated on the wind and she wore a bright gypsy-style dress. When she got closer, I realized she was one of my roommates from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill! Though I didn't even know she'd left the U.S.—and she didn't know I was in Afghanistan, we weren't that surprised to come upon each other. That says a lot about the times we were living in then."

"After 26 years of living in New York City, my husband Will and I now spend most of our time in Northwestern Connecticut, living in a house that overlooks a lake. We kayak and hike with our two Norfolk terriers, Joey and Mr. Bezo. Will's learning Italian, and I've been working with a tutor for two years trying to understand Dante's Divine Comedy. One of my biggest hobbies is reading philosophy and theology. We spend lots of time, of course, on our work. After writing three shows for the Morehead Planetarium in North Carolina, Will's writing a musical based on the Magic Tree House series. I'm writing book # 38 in the series. I also spend a lot of time with my sister Natalie Pope Boyce who works on the Magic Tree House Research Guides. Natalie and our nephews and some of our best friends live nearby in the Berkshires Hills of Massachusetts, so we're up there a lot, too. My only complaint is there is not enough time to do all I want to do. For instance, I'd love to take drawing classes and I'd love to paint the lake we're living on. And I'd love to bird watch and become a better cook and learn about classical music. Maybe sometime in the future...."

    Fantastic Book!

The most recent addition to the series, "Magic Tree House" is a book called, Dark Day in the Deep Sea (2008). Jack and Annie are at it again with another adventure to tell. In this 39th book of the series, author Mary Pope Osborne takes the reader on an exciting adventure to the South Pacific in the 1870's. The two siblings stumble upon the crew of the HMS Challenger and take part in their deep sea exploration. The two main characters meet scientist Henry Moseley and Professor Charles Wyville Thomson who while aboard the Challenger from 1872 and 1876, sailed around the world finding multiple species of sea life for the first time. While aboard the ship, Jack and Annie face fierce storms and giant octopi (as beautifully illustrated on the cover) and they begin to question whether or not they will make it home again to share their new secret of happiness. You'll have the read the book to find out!

As a teacher, I would highly recommend this or any other book from "Magic Tree House" series. The characters are compelling and the author makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the action. There are many, many, many teachable moments that can be found within this book! One fascinating fact for this book in particular is that students can learn that just a little over one hundred years ago, scientists did not have near the ideas that they have now. The students have the potential to see how discoveries are made, and how the knowledge that we possess now was developed. Each book gives the reader insight to historical facts and geographical locations. These books provided perfect opportunities for interdisciplinary units and with over 40 books to choose from, the author has basically covered any topic this reading level would study. I think this book and this series are excellent and any middle elementary teacher would benefit from using these books as learning tools.

My little brother loves it. He usually doesn't read books but he was so interested in it he did not want to go to bed! When I was little like him I loved these books. Jack and Annie ( the kids in the books) go on all these adventures. It's really good for a kids imagination. I sometimes read them and there usually for my brothers age ( 7 ). If you have a child, brother or sister that has a big imagination and loves to get in action then this is the book for him or her. Actually there's a series of these books! You could get them all and your child's or sibling's imagination will be a blast!!

Great look at past scientific thought

While Jack and Annie have their usual adventures, this time on a ship in the 1870s looking for sea monsters, the book gives kids a very different take on science as it was at the time. Scientific thought was much more hunches, guesswork and misunderstanding, the concept of 'scientfic theory' as we are taught today just forming. Today schools seem to have a religious faith in the scientific theory, with scientists seen as miracle-working gods, but it was very different 140 years ago, and Pope does a good job highlighting this fact.

    Great Summer Read!

I am a second grade teacher and have several Magic Tree House books in my classroom! I enjoy the series because they include factual information and challenging vocabulary along with adventure! Dark Day in the Deep Sea would make a great book for primary students to read over the summer to keep their reading and vocabulary skills sharp! Youngsters will also enjoy reading about the adventures of Annie and Jack as they encounter a scientific exploration ship and a mysterious sea monster!

good series with history and geography

The latest 'Magic Tree House' book (#39) is now out. This time Jack and Annie are whisked back to the 1870s in the South Pacific to join the crew of the HMS Challenger on their scientific exploration of the dark depths of the ocean. They get to meet some real historical characters, such as scientist Henry Moseley and Professor Charles Wyville Thomson. From 1872 to 1876, the Challenger sailed nearly 70,000 miles around the world and found more than 4,000 new species of sea life. However, will Jack and Annie survive a raging storm at sea and the tentacles of a giant octopus to get back to Frog Creek, PA, with their new secret of happiness for Merlin? We have been reading the Magic Tree House books since they first came out, and both of our boys have enjoyed them. What I like about them is that a lot of history and a good deal of geography, along with a little bit of traditional myth and legend, are included in a fictional story that appeals to children. So the books are educational, but they are also fun! While some of Jack and Annie's dialogue is a little stilted, for the most part these books do not talk down to children but challenge both their thinking and their vocabulary.

    Love the books but frustrated!

My 8 year old son just loves the books and we've been collecting them. The part where I'm frustrated is that we have the paperback format so far and now books are not being released in that format which is annoying. We have all 28 first books but I'm wainting to see if #29 - 32 will come in paperback. Then we have #33-36 in paperback. But #37 on only come in library binding or hardcover!

    Great for young readers!

Magic Tree House books are a hit with my second graders! As a teacher, I like the challenging vocabulary and great historical details presented in Dark Day in the Deep Sea. If you enjoy being swept away on an adventure, you'll definitely enjoy reading this book! On this journey, Jack and Annie are transported back in time to the 1870's. There they meet new people, roam around on a scientific exploration ship, and fall into a dangerous situation. With the help of one another and Merlin's magic wand, will they return safely to Frog Creek, Pennsylvania? Read this story to find out! (Tip: Don't start this book until you're ready to read for a while! It's hard to put down!)
