Dark Day in the Deep Sea (Magic Tree House Series #39)

Fantastic Book!

The most recent addition to the series, "Magic Tree House" is a book called, Dark Day in the Deep Sea (2008). Jack and Annie are at it again with another adventure to tell. In this 39th book of the series, author Mary Pope Osborne takes the reader on an exciting adventure to the South Pacific in the 1870's. The two siblings stumble upon the crew of the HMS Challenger and take part in their deep sea exploration. The two main characters meet scientist Henry Moseley and Professor Charles Wyville Thomson who while aboard the Challenger from 1872 and 1876, sailed around the world finding multiple species of sea life for the first time. While aboard the ship, Jack and Annie face fierce storms and giant octopi (as beautifully illustrated on the cover) and they begin to question whether or not they will make it home again to share their new secret of happiness. You'll have the read the book to find out!

As a teacher, I would highly recommend this or any other book from "Magic Tree House" series. The characters are compelling and the author makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the action. There are many, many, many teachable moments that can be found within this book! One fascinating fact for this book in particular is that students can learn that just a little over one hundred years ago, scientists did not have near the ideas that they have now. The students have the potential to see how discoveries are made, and how the knowledge that we possess now was developed. Each book gives the reader insight to historical facts and geographical locations. These books provided perfect opportunities for interdisciplinary units and with over 40 books to choose from, the author has basically covered any topic this reading level would study. I think this book and this series are excellent and any middle elementary teacher would benefit from using these books as learning tools.

woud like it

I did not read the book but, I think I would like it!

My little brother loves it. He usually doesn't read books but he was so interested in it he did not want to go to bed! When I was little like him I loved these books. Jack and Annie ( the kids in the books) go on all these adventures. It's really good for a kids imagination. I sometimes read them and there usually for my brothers age ( 7 ). If you have a child, brother or sister that has a big imagination and loves to get in action then this is the book for him or her. Actually there's a series of these books! You could get them all and your child's or sibling's imagination will be a blast!!

Great look at past scientific thought

While Jack and Annie have their usual adventures, this time on a ship in the 1870s looking for sea monsters, the book gives kids a very different take on science as it was at the time. Scientific thought was much more hunches, guesswork and misunderstanding, the concept of 'scientfic theory' as we are taught today just forming. Today schools seem to have a religious faith in the scientific theory, with scientists seen as miracle-working gods, but it was very different 140 years ago, and Pope does a good job highlighting this fact.

Great Summer Read!

I am a second grade teacher and have several Magic Tree House books in my classroom! I enjoy the series because they include factual information and challenging vocabulary along with adventure! Dark Day in the Deep Sea would make a great book for primary students to read over the summer to keep their reading and vocabulary skills sharp! Youngsters will also enjoy reading about the adventures of Annie and Jack as they encounter a scientific exploration ship and a mysterious sea monster!

Magic Tree House Series

As Always Mary Pope Osborne has written a wonderful story. Even though my daughters are over the age range the books have been written for , we still buy the Magic Tree House books every time a new one comes out. We have the whole collection & have read them all more then once. I can't wait until they have children that I can pass these wonderful books onto.

good series with history and geography

The latest 'Magic Tree House' book (#39) is now out. This time Jack and Annie are whisked back to the 1870s in the South Pacific to join the crew of the HMS Challenger on their scientific exploration of the dark depths of the ocean. They get to meet some real historical characters, such as scientist Henry Moseley and Professor Charles Wyville Thomson. From 1872 to 1876, the Challenger sailed nearly 70,000 miles around the world and found more than 4,000 new species of sea life. However, will Jack and Annie survive a raging storm at sea and the tentacles of a giant octopus to get back to Frog Creek, PA, with their new secret of happiness for Merlin? We have been reading the Magic Tree House books since they first came out, and both of our boys have enjoyed them. What I like about them is that a lot of history and a good deal of geography, along with a little bit of traditional myth and legend, are included in a fictional story that appeals to children. So the books are educational, but they are also fun! While some of Jack and Annie's dialogue is a little stilted, for the most part these books do not talk down to children but challenge both their thinking and their vocabulary.

Love the books but frustrated!

My 8 year old son just loves the books and we've been collecting them. The part where I'm frustrated is that we have the paperback format so far and now books are not being released in that format which is annoying. We have all 28 first books but I'm wainting to see if #29 - 32 will come in paperback. Then we have #33-36 in paperback. But #37 on only come in library binding or hardcover!

Great for young readers!

Magic Tree House books are a hit with my second graders! As a teacher, I like the challenging vocabulary and great historical details presented in Dark Day in the Deep Sea. If you enjoy being swept away on an adventure, you'll definitely enjoy reading this book! On this journey, Jack and Annie are transported back in time to the 1870's. There they meet new people, roam around on a scientific exploration ship, and fall into a dangerous situation. With the help of one another and Merlin's magic wand, will they return safely to Frog Creek, Pennsylvania? Read this story to find out! (Tip: Don't start this book until you're ready to read for a while! It's hard to put down!)
