Overview

Renée Fleming describes her new album Dark Hope as a "visit to a new, parallel universe." The album was recorded in close collaboration with producer David Kahne (Regina Spektor, The Strokes, The Bangles, Sublime, and countless others) and features a diverse and adventurous program of pop songs.

Fleming, the superstar soprano known as "the people's diva," says of Dark Hope: "I've always been inspired by artists who have shown musical and intellectual curiosity and the courage to take risks. Because everything about the voice interests me, I felt it would be fascinating to learn a completely different style of singing."

Fleming says that for the recording of this album, "Singing in a small, acoustic booth, with a microphone that's very close, in this very intimate style, is the complete opposite of how I usually sing."

There were similarities to how she prepares for an opera role, however. Fleming points out that for each track on Dark Hope "we found an interpretation that enabled the point of view to sound authentic coming from me. Every song has a story, so this whole idea of enacting or playing a role is doubly true for this music." From the Label

The first time I played this CD I was a little disappointed. For me, putting it in random selection selection with other CD's made me appreciate every note of every song. You would NEVER know this is Renee. It is fun to have people try to guess who is singing! However, her voice in this genre is absolutely fabulous. I give her so much credit for having the guts to try something so different. I truly could not describe this as a "rock album".....very hard to categorize exactly what it is, but give it a try....you will enjoy!

I'm surprised that this opera Diva would succumb to the crossover genre - I absolutely love her Belle Canto CD and have gifted many a friend with it. I am an opera enthusiast so perhaps I'm being a bit harsh here. She sounds a bit like the black cherry voice of Cher on the first song. In my ear, Jeff Buckley is the ONLY one who should sing Hallejah. Sorry Renee, I'll keep your other operatic CDs on my top playlist, but not this one.

My apologies to Ms. Fleming for not writing this earlier. Within the first few bars you will be lured in to the recording like someone being lured by the sirens of Greece. The emotion in her voice will make you stay for ever. It is just a beautiful and enchanting piece of work that will have you falling in love with Ms. Fleming. Her voice talks to you and grabs your soul. Thank you Renee. Will you marry me?
