Overview

When high school student Derrick Booker, the only black student at a posh Orange County high school, is accused of killing his white girlfriend, ex-college football hero and detective Jim Knighthorse is hired to dig a little deeper into the murder. It doesn't take long for Knighthorse to realize that not all is as it seems at tranquil Huntington High, from a band director who preys on the innocent to a vice-principal with a secret agenda of her own. Not to mention someone's hired a professional killer to keep Knighthorse permanently off the case. As the investigation continues, Knighthorse's personal life is shattered by the discovery of new evidence relating to his mother's unsolved murder, a murder dating back twenty years. Reeling from the discovery, a determined Jim Knighthorse sets out to bring two killers to justice.

Editorial Reviews

Blurb - Piers Anthony
"I read Dark Horse by J.R. Rain. He's the author of Moon Dance, that I reviewed last column. The author is a private investigator, and it shows; this is another fast moving and entertaining detective story. It is the first of a series, published by Lulu.com. Rain is surely destined for larger success, if he can get the right break; his fiction is fun reading." --PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of A Spell for Chameleon and On A Pale Horse

"What would a good mystery be without some interesting twists? Dark Horse definitely has several of those!"
Blurb - Gemma Halliday
"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere. Rain does an amazing job of blending suspense, mystery and humor in this fantastic debut novel destined for the keeper shelf." --GEMMA HALLIDAY, author of Spying in High Heels

"I love Jim Knighthorse! Please write faster, Mr. Rain!" --ELAINE BABICH, author of You Never Called Me Princess and Relatively Normal
Blurb - Aiden James
"I finished Dark Horse late last night. I enjoyed it immensely--very good story, J.R.! I really liked your dialogue, which kept me chuckling each time I sat down to read the book. Add great character and scene descriptions and a well-paced plot, and you've got a gripping story indeed. I can honestly say your book was as entertaining as anything I've ever read from Patricia Cornwell. I can easily see Dark Horse moving to the big screen!" --AIDEN JAMES, author of Cades Cove and Deadly Night

I enjoyed reading this book, it was a good read. Jim Knighthorse is a great character, he is smart, and tough but also has a sweet side to him. Jim is full of one liners that will make you laugh. Now I am about to read the second book of the series!

I just finished reading Dark Horse and have started the next in the series: Mummy....? The only negative to Dark Horse was the foul language constantly throughout....it was definitely not needed. I would suggest reviewing it and take out about 99% of the f***** words. The book has great characters and great description of locations, places, people. Lots of one liners that will make you laugh out loud. An overall great book. Keep the series rolling Jim Knighthorse.

Jim Knighthorse is a great character. He is funny. He is smart. He is athletic and he is perfect...or so he thinks at times. I loved this story and the introduction of the charaters. I really like Jim's girlfriend and their relationship. After this book, I couldnt wait for the next one!

I am not a big fan of books that go overboard with travelogue descriptions. This author does a great job setting the scene and creating a believable, human, character. Looking forward to starting book two as soon as I end this review.

This is a great book, number one in his series. It is a wonderful introduction to the Jim Knighthorse character! If you like mysteries, and page-turners, this is for you. I would recommend this for almost any age--teen and up. This is an excellent writer and he has several series that you would enjoy after this one.

Very goid story. Dont let whatbsome posters said about bad language put you off. I didnt see that many bad words in this and really, what do you expect from cops and private detectives? Do you really think they sit around speaking proper english all day? If an occasional xurse word offends you so badly maybe you need to read some other type book. This book was good.

This is a fast read. Typical PI storyline. But, character development is mediocre, I was not really drawn in to the story, and the writing is not terribly descriptive and quite terse. I bought this looking for a new author to read. If you are looking for a quick mystery, this is ok, but there are better options.

This book made the prtagonist (Jim Knighthorse) SOOO bloated. But I finally was reminded that arrogance is an absolute sign of insecurity and self-loathing (think Terrell Owens). This book is a narrative, which allows the reader to muse with the protagonist and finally underdtand that his self promotion is due to his detective daddy essentially ignoring him and his mom while Jim was growing up. Revelling in his size and speed, Jim had been approached by the NFL since his college sophomore year. A leg injury forced him to grudgingly follow in his dad's footsteps and become a detective. Having lost his mom at the age of ten, he despised everything his dad represented. One can only imagine his disgust once he realizes he inherited his dad's investigative abilities. In simple prose, the reader explores Jim's life--the good, the bad and the evil. This book is SO good and very clear to read. This author is getting alot of my money, because I am slowly but surely becoming a HUGE fan.
