Overview

Nicky Rigopoulos is a slick personal injury lawyer who sells out his clients to finance his campaign for state court judge in Syracuse, New York. When his law partner is murdered, Nicky finds himself the target of a police investigation. To make matters worse, his lover won't confirm his alibi, and his estranged wife would rather see him in jail. As he and his iron-woman defense lawyer scramble to muster a legal defense, the murderer strikes again. Nicky knows that, if he is to stay out of prison, he must catch the killer before being caught by the police. So he goes undercover during the middle of his campaign. To Nicky, "undercover" means over the top. He dresses like a Hell's Angel before riding into a trailer park to face a disgruntled client. He dresses like a suburban cowboy before moseying into the Turning Stone Casino, hot on the trail of a down-on-his-luck kemo sabe. And he dresses like a psychotic football fan before leading police on a high-speed foot chase through the Carrier Dome. Along the way, he meets a milk-chugging frat boy, an accountant-by-day bookie, and an economist-turned-stripper-turned-bartender. The truth they help Nicky uncover surprises even the Syracuse police detective bent on bringing him to justice. Dark Horse is a fast-paced legal mystery that assembles a cast of colorful characters, drops them into the drama of local politics, and adds plenty of humor.

Editorial Reviews

Book Ideas
If you think the idea of a man running for an elected office while simultaneously running from the police trying to solve a murder sounds a little unbelievable, I'd agree with you. But I'm here to tell you it works! Dark Horse is a real page-turner, a lawyer-mystery-thriller that is Grisham-like in its execution, and a thoroughly enjoyable read.
—Douglas Malcolm
Heartland Reviews

Library Journal

Syracuse attorney Nicky Rigopoulos is running for New York State Supreme Court judge when his partner is murdered just after she quits as his campaign manager. Then his wife is drowned in their pool, and Nicky heads the suspect list. An amusing but lightweight legal mystery. Langan lives in the Syracuse area.

Kirkus Reviews
A Syracuse attorney who's made a specialty of skating on thin ice feels the surface tremble beneath him when his partner is murdered. Nicky Rigopoulos is every inch the modern politician. There's his gift for bringing people together, his call to public service and, of course, his extramarital affairs. Nicky's lovers have ranged from Carlotta Magnarella, the law partner who calls him "a Mediterranean Bill Clinton," to Lilly Longacre, the wife of the county Democratic Party chair who endorsed his candidacy for the New York Supreme Court. Nicky's trophy wife Scarlet doesn't mind, since she's busy with Randy DeVine, Nicky's competition for the bench. Even Sal Magnarella, Lottie's bar-owning brother, has long since forgiven his best buddy for dumping his sister. In fact, the only people who have a beef with Nicky are his clients, who watch in disbelief as he settles their million-dollar liability claims for pennies on the dollar. But that all changes when Lottie is beaten to death and the police decide Nicky killed her. As the pressure builds, Nicky's political dreams are seriously endangered. So are the women in his life. Even his own lawyer, lesbian Amazon Dana Dzikowski, can't keep her temper as Nicky slips deeper into trouble. The efficient storytelling and snappy dialogue shine before the obligatory plot twists set in. And just when the tale seems snarled in complexities, first-timer Langan succeeds in pulling a lovely rabbit from his hat.

    Entertaining¿
Mike Logan draws readers into the intrigue of the legal system. Nicky Rigopoulos has the reputation of ambulance chaser, but that does not stop him for running for judge. Knowing he is the prime suspect in the death of his campaign manager, Nicky begins his search for the real killer.
Dark Horse is Mike Langan at his finest. This book is fast-paced and action-packed. Nicky is a humorous character in his own sleazy way. Dark Horse is an entertaining whodunit that mystery fans will love.

    Impressive First Book

Dark Horse is an impressive first novel. The best part of the book is the dialogue between the characters which is witty, funny, and sharp. The ending is unpredictable and as I read the book, I had to keep guessing as to who was the killer. The book is sarcastic and irreverent, which makes for some hilarious scenes. I really enjoyed reading this book and was excited to see that the author wrote another book, Ready for the Defense , which is supposed to be out later this year!

    Darker Opponent

Nicky Rigopoulos is my anti-hero! From the start, I was smitten with Mr. Smoothie's acerbic wit and disarming charm. I couldn't wait to hear his smart retorts and sarcastic quips! Not only did Nicky exude sex appeal and power, but also genuine atonement. With each colorful character Nicky met, I kept trying to peg the killer but it wasn't till the end that I found out.Wrongfully accused a murderer, the dark horse running candidate must contend with a darker opponent!

    fun amateur sleuth

In Syracuse, New York personal injury lawyer Nicky Rigopoulos wants no problem cases interfering with his efforts to become a judge thus he settles for less than his clients deserve when even his partner Lottie Magnarella argues with him that he behaves unethically. Although married to the trophy wife that a hot shot attorney wannabe judge needs, Nicky is a first class womanizer to include at one time Lottie. His spouse knows what he is and does not mind as long as he keeps her in a luxurious lifestyle as she is a man-eater. ---- Nicky¿s chances of landing on the bench sink totally when Lottie is found dead he is the prime suspect as just a few hours earlier they had a public brouhaha over his settling a case for her. Not trusting cops or lawyers as he knows both groups too well, Nicky investigates only to have the police believe he also killed his spouse and one of his lovers. ---- Once you get past the amateur sleuth paradox compounded in this case by the protagonist having strong connections and money, DARK LADY is a terrific whodunit. The story line is fast-paced as Nicky struggles to stay one step ahead of the police while feeling one step behind the culprit. Adding to the fun is that the lead character is the epitome of sleazy lawyer so that readers have mixed feelings as he deserves the worse though he is innocent. ---- Harriet Klausner
