Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Call it the Seabiscuit Factor: We all cheer a winner, but what electrifies us most is the unexpected triumph of an underdog. In this book-and-DVD set, Not Till the Fat Lady Sings author Les Krantz re-creates the 50 greatest sports upsets of all time. They include the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Olympic victory by the U.S. hockey team; the Amazin' Mets' World Series triumph of 1969; wrestler Rulon Gardner's shocking victory over a fearsome Russian champion at the 2000 Olympics; and the Buffalo Bills recovering from a 32-point deficit to win a 1993 AFC playoff game.
Library Journal
People love sports for a variety of reasons, and living vicariously through the exploits of favorite players and teams is a primary one. Although there is a clich that everyone loves a winner, there are those who love to cheer for the underdog. Krantz (Not Till the Fat Lady Sings: The Most Dramatic Sports Finishes of All Time), with the help of ballots he circulated to sportswriters, broadcasters, and professionals, has compiled a list, in handsomely illustrated chapter format, of the 50 greatest sports upsets of all time. Using such criteria as uneven matches,an injured competitor, and the "underdog factor"-which made the triumph over the odds that much more amazing-Krantz provides stories that are well written and to the point, with a certain amount of historical perspective added. Deciding on the top-50 list for anything can be controversial, and no doubt a number of readers will disagree with these 50, which cover professional, Olympic, and varsity events. (For one thing, there is clearly an American bias.) But this work will appeal both to sports enthusiasts and to fans who love underdog stories. Recommended for larger sports collections.-Tim Delaney, SUNY at Oswego Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
