Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
ea. vol: unpaged. (Hello Reading Series). CIP. Viking. 1988. PLB $8.95; pap. $2.95. PreS-Gr 2 Emerging readers should be delighted with the first of these two offerings. Mole and Mouse set out to clean their house. Once it is cleaned, Mouse does not want Mole to eat, take a bath, or take a nap for fear that the house will not stay clean. Prebenna's colorful watercolors show Mole showering under a tree-hung watering can, napping in a tree hammock, and sharing a picnic with his friend Mouse. The natural dialogue includes repetitive and predictable text, just right for readers attempting to confirm their fluency. It's a lively reader for energetic new readers. The second book does have the large print; clear, colorful illustrations; and well-positioned text that has been characteristic of the other books in the series. However, it lacks the smoothness and naturalness of text. The focus is on the dark quiet night and the animals who are sleeping. The text and illustrations combine to give readers much information about the different types of places in which animals sleep. However many of the sentences are choppy, and the connections between some of the sentences are abrupt. It's not one of Ziefert's better offerings.
