But the grandeur of the house and the impeccable family credentials are a facade for some shockingly salacious practices. Lord James is spending an unusual amount of time in the stables while his idle son shows little interest in anything save his stepsister, Tania. Meanwhile, Lady Marina is harbouring dark secrets of her own. Annabel is drawn into a world of decadence where anything is allowed as long as a respectable appearance prevails. In an atmosphere of intensity and sexual secrecy, she becomes involved in a variety of interesting situations.

Fans of erotica with an edge of gothic decadence will relish this cleverly inventive country manor romp. Naive Annabel gets her horizons expanded when she's thrown to the aristocratic wolves on a decorating assignment to Leyton Hall, home to the loutish young Crispian and his debauched playmate Tania, as well as Crispian's distractable mother and dirty-minded old dad. To her pleasurable dismay, Annabel finds that she takes quite readily to the adult fun and games there, to which the staff and especially the neighboring gentry make a contribution too. The tone is arch, but knowingly so, and Alleyn has a special knack for ratcheting up the erotic suspense. The explicit erotic games, with their themes of dominance and submission, leave nothing to the imagination, and the story propels itself forward to a very protracted and vivid "party" in which everyone's limits will be pressed and which will resolve the many conflicting emotions Annabel has been subjected to. Though not without its elements of erotic romance, this is a hardcore read meant for adventurous readers who pine to see just how naughty all those titled English wretches can truly be. Sweet Annabel might remain "intrinsically pure", as one character puts it to her; but her varied experiences with a plurality of partners will push her mind and body to their limits!
