Dark River - Songs Of The Civil War Era: Interpretations By Austin's Finest Musicians
Conceived and produced by guitarist Chuck Pinnell, this 15-track set features Civil War era songs re-imagined by several singer/songwriters, most of them connected with the Austin, Texas folk scene. The end result is a bright and well-recorded project that is all pop-folk, making these venerable songs breathe and shine anew in the 21st century. Two of the clear highlights are Slaid Cleaves' haunting and emotionally sustained versions of "She Moved Through the Fair" and "The Streets of Laredo."

I love the song selection and the artists are some of Austin's best. Strike just the right note to convey the wistfulness and beauty of these songs. And don't miss the liner notes with beautiful photographs of the artists by none other than Scott Newton, acclaimed live music photographer and long-time Austin City Limits still photographer.
