Ominous summer, full of mystery, death and miracles
The book starts out super, anyone who's an animal lover and a reader of thrilling novels will definitely enjoy it, at least the first half makes sense but later the novel does take a dive off the whacky cliff and manages to lose some of its appeal, never the less I did liked it. I enjoyed the good bits and overall I'm happy I read it. Johansen's books tend to be similar, and this has the usual mix of romance and evil guys and things that hover above paranormal territory which can be fun and interesting, overall making it a light read.
The story begins on a small Caribbean island where rescue workers are searching for any survivors of the latest earthquake. The reader meets a very special Labrador named Ned and his owner, Jude Marrok, former navy SEAL with plenty of strength and courage to do the impossible and try and save lives in places that most have though of as forsaken. They are interrupted by a mysterious shooter who nearly kills Ned and forces Marrok to seek treatment, which is where they meet Devon Brady, the local veterinarian who finds Marrok's stubborn attitude annoying but his connection and bond with Ned totally charming. The dog and his master seem to be one, so when Marrok leaves Ned in her care to go find the mysterious shooter, she somehow feels that the man will meet more than punishment. Things start to get hot when Marrok asks for Devon's help in taking the dog with her and meeting up later to pick him up from her place, the evil mysterious nemesis that shot at Marrok isn't alone, all hell breaks loose when they start to chase Devon to get to the dog. Turns out there is more than one dog that Marrok watches over, and there is something special about all of them, unfortunately the bad guys don't care to get the dogs alive and will do anything in their power to capture them and exterminate everyone else involved. Devon and Marrok are on the run when the realize that they share more than will to live and run, they start to develop feelings, ones that could get them into even more trouble.
Few things that took stars away from the novel included action that happened off the page, people would go and do stuff and it simply wasn't written out, also there was a lot of dialogue, most of it repetitive and boring at times. I felt that the mystery was the best part, trying to figure out what is so special about those amazing dogs, I really liked Ned, he was one of the best parts but his role seems to have slimmed out through the book where he was barely mentioned anymore. Marrok was a good guy, interesting enough, Devon was little stubborn but she seemed to have gotten over lots of deaths pretty fast, I guess having a cute guy next to her helped her cope, no matter how much she tried to resist him. I felt that the main bad guy didn't get enough of time at the end, and the twists included wasn't extreme, but overall fun summer read, just don't expect too much and you wont be disappointed. The book reads really fast and looses steam a bit towards the end, but it's totally finishable and I never finish things that annoy me.
