A powerful story of the amazing transformation that patient endurance worked in the lives of both slaves and masters who came to accept servanthood to God as the mark of obedience to Christ.

    Truth Revealed Through Fiction

I found this book while browsing through our library. I was surprised at the emotions it drew from me, a white female. Sometimes I had to put it down for a while because of the pain it made real. The author has done good research and has shown me what it was like to long to make the simplest, personal choice as a free person and how free black people, as well as white suffered in helping bring others to a freedom that took generations to be complete.

Well written, good character developement and story line.

I found the characters compelling and authentic. I believe this was a fair dipiction of slavery in that it didn't paint Southerners as all bad, or Northerners as all good. It showed the ugliness of slavery and the beauty inherent in the human spirits longing for freedom. Joseph's dignity, honesty and faith were integrated in a believable manner consistant with the storyline. I enjoyed this book and give it a high recommendation.

    Mixed emotions

We were "assigned" this book to read for a book club and it was the first choice. I loved it and hated it. At times, the events were so heart-rending, I would have to put it down and go get lighter fare. Although billed as christian fiction (of which I am not a fan of); it was not overwhelming and was touching and appropriate at times. My personal test was: is it a keeper? Is it going to go on my personal library's shelf. No it's not. However, if I was in the mood for "high brow reading", I would go to the library and borrow its sequels. Also, if it were available in large print, I would buy it for the library I run. It did make me cry...
