Editorial Reviews

ALA Booklist
“The book dresses up teen-identity issues in midnight-black humor and piles on so much persistent weirdness that oddball outsiders, goths in training, and other subversive types will find themselves positively smirking with glee.”—
VOYA
Thirteen-year-old Emily's story continues in journal form and covers two weeks of her life. She receives a letter from her (deceased) Dark Aunts instructing her to return to their ancestral town of Seaside to receive her inheritance, the magical Black Rock. Soon after arriving in Seaside, Emily discovers her archenemy, Attikol, is also there, with the goal of claiming the Black Rock for himself. He has also imprisoned her cousin, Jakey, and somehow pulled all of Jakey's memories of Emily from his brain in order to find out Emily's whereabouts and her plans to obtain the Black Rock. Emily the Strange is indeed strange—as is her world. There is nothing believable in this book, but it is a fun mystery/adventure. Emily's unusual powers and equally unusual companions always come to her rescue, so there is not a lot of suspense. Her resourcefulness and determination, however, make Emily an appealing character. Young teens will find the story entertaining but will find more enjoyment if they are already familiar with Emily through the previous books. The journal format makes this a quick read—that, plus the quirky characters and rapid pace of the plot, makes this a good choice for reluctant readers. Reviewer: Debbie Wenk
VOYA
Quirky and witty Emily time-travels to the 1790s to save her thirteen-year-old Dark Aunt Lilly and renew her own supply of dark elixir. Jakey, who works for Emily's ancestral enemy, Attikol, reveals an ancient diary which records Lilly's death from a white fever epidemic, even though she is a healer. Emily suspects Boris instead, the 1790s version of Attikol. To free Lilly from Boris, Emily first frees her from her corset, her inhibitions, and her mother's opinions. Caleb, Jakey's parallel, then uses Lilly's dying cat to motivate Lilly to produce dark elixir, the evidence of her maturity and power. Emily outsmarts Boris with fake funerals for herself and Lilly, but learns that each Dark Girl, including Emily, must generate her own dark elixir (or magic). This delightful new addition to the series questions whether time really changes anything. Like most of us, Emily is tied to both good and evil through her ancestors. The white fever epidemic is stopped because Emily uses the magic of another family that the general population and conventional wisdom might ignore. Emily helps Lilly overcome the restrictions of her time, but may have to confront the personal procrastination allowed by the freedom of her own time. Entertaining and thought-provoking, Emily's adventures maintain the series' popularity and present an interesting choice for a mother/daughter reading group. Reviewer: Lucy Schall

    Good but first is better

To anonymous (2 stars, feb. 20), i think you are wrong, but anyway dont use this as what you think of when you think of emily. For some reason, her strangeness doesnt shine as much in this book as in the others and comics. Also, the only normal thing about emily is her desire to be different.

I dont mean to be a h8r, but

I think its too mainstream. A typical story plot: almost average girl. With some kind of problem that she gets through. I know thats the case with most teen fiction books, but. I think the author could've been a little more creative.
