Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"An excellent short story collection... The stories are not easily classifiable, verring between fantasy, horror, and mystery, but I can guarantee the level of suspense will give your heart a good workout." - The New York Sun

"Suzuki is called the Stephen King of his country, but that's not really accurate; King isn't nearly as adept at creating complex characters, explaining scientific principles or writing the kind of dialogue that might actually be spoken by humans." - Las Vegas Mercury

Meet the Author

Koji Suzuki was born in 1957 in Hamamatsu, southwest of Tokyo. He attended Keio University where he majored in French. After graduating he held numerous odd jobs, including a stint as a cram school teacher. Also a self-described jock, he holds a first-class yachting license and crossed the U.S., from Key West to Los Angeles, on his motorcycle. The father of two daughters, Suzuki is a respected authority on childrearing and has written numerous works on the subject. He acquired his expertise when he was a struggling writer and househusband. Suzuki also has translated a children's book into Japanese, The Little Sod Diaries by the crime novelist Simon Brett. In 1990, Suzuki's first full-length work, Paradise won the Japanese Fantasy Novel Award and launched his career as a fiction writer. Ring, written with a baby on his lap, catapulted him to fame, and the multi-million selling sequels Spiral and Loop cemented his reputation as a world-class talent. Often called the "Stephen King of Japan," Suzuki has played a crucial role in establishing mainstream credentials for horror novels in his country. He is based in Tokyo but loves to travel, often in the United States. Birthday is his sixth novel to appear in English.

YOU MAY NEVER LOOK AT WATER THE SAME AGAIN!!!

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK TO READ!!! THIS IS BOOK IS A FAST READ AND VERY ENJOYABLE. THE BOOK IS MADE OF SHORT STORIES THAT DEAL WITH WATER IN SOME FORM. EACH SHORT STORY PUTS THE READER INTO THE EACH OF THE CHARACTERS STRUGGLE, BASICALLY AS A THIRD PERSON WATCHING THE STORY. KOJI SUZUKI TRANSPORTS THE READER INTO EACH STORY AS IF THE READER WAS ACTUALLY WATCHING A MOVIE. I KNOW THE FIRST STORY WAS TURNED INTO A MOVIE BUT THE WHOLE BOOK SHOULD OF BEEN MADE INTO MOVIES BECAUSE HOW DESCREPTIVE AND DETAILED EACH STORY IS. THIS IS NO DENYING IF READERS ARE READING THIS REVIEW THAT THEY SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT IF THEY LIKE HORROR STORIES!!!

You'll never see water the same way again

A very thrilling read that keeps you at the edge of your seat. The stories will remain embeded in your mind and you will never see water the same way again. My favorite story is 'The Hold' because of its great use of irony.

Koji Suzuki is a master of the spook

Koji Suzuki displays his finesse for the haunted tale with these eerie, water-themed tales. If you liked 'Ring' or any of the films he's been invloved with, 'Dark Water' is for you. The stories 'Dream Cruise' and 'The Hold' are especially spine tingling.

    A Work that'll Haunt

Absolutely stunning. The words Suzuki-san uses to grip your attention and send shudders down your spine... amazing. He's the reason why Japanese Horror is so frightening.

Pick it up and you won't put it down!

I picked this book up and began reading it. The description words Mr. Suzuki uses in his books, haunts you forever. This book is very good, i reccomend it to and fan of horror novels, and anyone who wants to get a scary taste of modern Japanese literature.
