A mysterious curse puts unusual limitations on the cast of Sinclair's slow-moving but intriguing paranormal romance, the first of a trilogy. The blind Darkborn of Minhorne can't survive in the light, while the Lightborn will perish without it. The peaceful lives of Dr. Balthasar Hearne and Lady Telmaine Hearne, magically gifted Darkborn, are disrupted when Tercelle Amberley, once betrothed to Bal's long-missing brother and now engaged to duke-to-be Ferdenzil Mycene, shows up to ask Bal's help in delivering her illegitimate-and Lightborn-fathered-twin boys. She promptly deserts the infants, and an assassin seeking them takes the Hearnes' daughter hostage as further complications ensue. Sinclair (Cavalcade) raises too many unanswered questions, mostly regarding the origins of the curse and the characters' Regency-style manners, but the political intrigue is mostly enough to sustain readers' interest. As the bell tolls sunrise, Tercelle Amberley arrives at the doorstep of Balthasar Hearne. Unable to turn away a fellow Darkborn who would burn to ash instantly with sunlight, Bal invites her in. Tercelle confides that she is with child, although not from her betrothed but from a lover who came to her in the daylight. That night she gives birth to twins who Bal discovers are sighted like Lightborns. Tercelle tries to conceal her indiscretion by drugging Bal and murdering the infants. Bal stops Tercelle and sends for his sister, a mage, to take the twins to safety. Tercelle escapes, and Bal is beaten near death. Bal's daughter is kidnapped by the attackers and held as ransom for the infants. With the help of Ishmael, a shadowhunter, Bal's wife Telmaine searches for their daughter. Ishmael discovers that high born Telmaine is an untrained mage fixated on concealing her power from her husband and the rest of high society. Full of magic, mystery and adventure, this novel is the first of a proposed trilogy surrounding the world of Darkborns and Lightborns. Darkborns are a blind race that relies on sonn to "see" their darkened surroundings, whereas darkness is fatal to the sighted Lightborns. The setting has a historical feel, with depictions of scandal and intrigue among the aristocracy and the "uncivilized" mages. It takes careful reading and patience to fully understand the world of the Darkborn and what it means to sonn.     I Also Recommend:

    Very unique World

    I loved the sunlight moonlight citizens concept for this book. The writer didn't follow a typical dark=vampire theme. i loved the way she described how the characters saw their world and how they got along with each other. It was a fascinating "curse" I hope she will reveal more about the society and the curse on the two peoples. The author did a good job switching between characters and keeping you craving to return to each one where you left off. I am excited about the next in series and hope this author keeps it up!

    DarkBorn

    This book captures your attention right from the start. It gets you trying to figure out what is going on or what the background is when you read the first paragraph. Very engaging and very imaginative. Excellent characters and plot. Can't wait for the next book to come out.

    Loved it!

    I loved this book. The concept of the dark vs light societies is what made me pick it up. I enjoyed every second of it.

    In Minhorne, Tercelle Amberley arrives at the home of Darkborn mages Dr. Balthasar and Lady Telmaine Hearne to beg a favor. They are reluctant to assist Tercelle, who used to be engaged to his missing brother, but her connection as the fiancée of ducal heir Ferdenzil Mycene gives them no choice.

    Tercelle explains she is carrying the illegitimate offspring of a Lightborn father shocking her Hearne hosts; as they know the curse makes Darkborn shun the light and the Lightborn shun the dark so they never mix. Bal helps her give birth to twin boys, who shockingly can sees as Nightborn are always blind. Almost immediately afterward Tercelle flees leaving her offspring behind. Thugs arrive demanding the infants be handed to them; Telmaine takes off the gloves to keep her beloved safe from a third ancient enemy of both races.

    This is an intriguing romantic fantasy in which readers will believe in the curse that has split the residents of Minhorne into two distinct groups that are supposedly unable to mingle; thus the story line contains a fascinating underlying mystery. The aristocratic Hearne couple is a strong pairing as their relationship evolves with the changing threat. Although more insight into the origins of the curse would have been appreciated as the paranormal blight is just there, but with so much influence on society, fans will relish a visit to the divided city of Minhorne.
