Ten years ago, the mysterious Hell's Gate suddenly materialized in the middle of Tokyo, and the stars of the night sky were obscured in darkness. In their place, new stars emerged, each corresponding to an individual endowed with supernatural abilities. Devoid of emotion and conscience, these powerful killers have come to be known as Contractors.

But most people know nothing of the Contractors in their midst, and high-schooler Kana Shinoh is no exception. Still struggling to pick up the pieces after her father's death last year, Kana has never troubled herself with the rumors about Hell's Gate. That is, until she spots her father in the street one day. Determined to prove her father is still alive, Kana begins her search, but her mission is attracting some rather dangerous attention. Fortunately, she is rescued from the clutches of death by Hei, the most wanted Contractor in Tokyo. Though he is unsympathetic to her situation, Hei agrees to protect her as she searches for her father. But just how much should she trust the Contractor known as the Black Reaper?

    Very Fresh and Entertaining

I loved the Darker than Black anime series when I watched so I decided to buy the graphic novel. I'm glad I did. It was a totally different story so I didn't feel like I was seeing the same stuff which was good. Hei is even more interesting in manga format than he is in the anime. The characters are amazing and the story, the plot - everything - is spectacular. Very exciting. It has just the right amount of action, drama and even small doses of comedy to lighten the mood just a bit. Definitely worth the money.

I purchased this because i really liked the anime. If your expecting this manga to be a retelling of the series you'll be disappointed. Its an entirely different story that involves Hei helping some girl, also their is no Yin and you barely touch on Mao and the older man partner. Really if i'm being completely honest, without the anime, i think this manga would fail. Its extremely vague on how ability's work and why contractors are the way they are. But if you completely ignore those key factors that makes darker than black the series that it is, then i suppose its a decent love story by the ending. Do i regret buying this? No, it was a decent story with great art(looks very shojo, i'm not a huge fan but good art is good art) but compared to the anime i'd say this doesn't do it justice by a long shot.
