Dear Reader,
The Darkest Evening of the Year is meant to be (but you'll be the judge) an edge-of-the-seat, funny, uplifting novel about dogs and the wonderful people who rescue dogs that have been abused or abandoned. It's about an exceptional woman, Amy Redwing, and a mysterious golden retriever, Nickie, who go on a magical journey through some dark territory that will require all the courage and all the faith in each other they can muster. I hope you'll think I've done dogs proud, because I've known few human beings who can match the goodness of the average dog!
--Dean Koontz
Set mostly in Southern California, this topnotch thriller from bestseller Koontz (The Good Guy) depicts with unabashed emotion and wit the magical powers of golden retrievers-in particular, a female named Nickie, who will stop at nothing to save innocent children and protect their guardians. Amy Redwing, the survivor of a horrifying marriage, establishes Golden Heart to rescue golden retrievers, rehabilitate the abused ones and find "forever homes." A supernatural chain of events ensues after Amy and her architect boyfriend, Brian McCarthy, rescue Nickie during a violent intervention in a family dispute. Soon the pair are on a mission that leads to a transformative confrontation with a number of ugly characters-Gunther Schloss, a frustrated aspiring novelist turned killer-for-hire; Moonglow, a psychobitch in the Mommie Dearest league; and Moonglow's lover, Harrow, a self-obsessed sicko. This is the perfect book for thriller addicts who know the darkest hour is just before dawn and for canine lovers who remember "dog" spelled backwards is "god." (Nov. 27)
Copyright 2007 Reed Business InformationKoontz's latest tale of a mysterious canine that devoted animal rights activist Amy Redwing brings into her home is a powerful thriller that should have the listener's pulse racing. Sadly, the narration by singer and entertainer Kristen Kairos is bland and uninspired, resulting in a near-tedious listening experience. Her voice is machine-like and conventional, droning on in a monotonous tone that leaves little room for improvisation. Redwing becomes a ditzy airhead from the get-go, which makes it harder to feel sorry for her when things eventually fall apart. Unless the character is a drunken maniac or soft-spoken nun, Kairos offers little shift in tone and dialect for the large cast of characters that pop up throughout. Moments of the utmost tension and suspense are lost in Kairos's insipid reading, a shame considering the story is one of Koontz's best in years. By the third chapter most listeners will have lost interest. Simultaneous release with the Bantam hardcover (Reviews, Oct. 29). (Nov.)

I Also Recommend:
Koontz is my guilty indulgence. He draws you in and makes it impossible to stop reading. He's pretentious, though. In this book, he did a great job explaining how dog rescues work within the context of the story. However, when educating readers about Second Life or the inner workings of lighthouses, he writes in a condescending tone. Granted, his books aren't scholarly works or anything, but should he, as the author, really be assuming total idiocy of his readership? This is a common problem, not exclusive to this book. A problem with this book in particular is just the way it all wraps up way too quickly and conveniently in the end. One of the things I loved about Koontz was that his books all had a scientific explanation, or if they had a supernatural bent it was more of a suggestion or possibility. I got really frustrated with the lack of mystery in this novel. All that said, I read the book in less than a day and enjoyed doing so very much. GREAT beach read.

If you love animals and if you love Dean Koontz, you will LOVE this book. A little tamer than some of his past works, but I actually enjoyed that about it.

There are few authors that I enjoy as much as I do Dean Koontz and have read them all evr since the first one I picked up; The Watchers.

I have read many of his books, but this one is so touching. Any fan of Mr. Koontz should read this. In my opinion, it's one of his best. You will laugh, cry and get angry all at once.

You fall in love with the personality of all of the characters. The bad characters give you a weird detached from the world feeling, and the good one's give you the same feeling. It is a very grabbing book, I could hardly put it down to go to work. Definitely worth the read.

I enjoyed the characters immensely and thought that the story line was unique and well thought out. I must say that there are some really violent scenes in this book that might be disturbing for some people.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.I really loved this title, much more so than Mr. Koontz's last two releases, THE GOOD GUY and THE HUSBAND. Although this title follows in the same vein as regards to time (it only covers roughly 48-hours), it has characters who are easier to relate to and a chilling, supernatural-based storyline.
As the other reviewer mentions, it's a kind of memorial to Mr. Koontz's own Golden Retreiver, Trixie, who has passed away. In the book, a dog named Nickie is at the center of the story, along with the humans that she must protect.
This is an emotional thriller with some pretty messed-up bad guys, and if you like that type of story, you'll love this one, too!

This book has twists and turns galore and will get you hooked from the very beginning. There are definitely some disturbing characters and situations, but the good in the story definitely shines through. Don't miss out on this one!

I love Dean Koontz's writing. Been reading his books for over 20 years. I especially love any book that features a dog as a supporting role (and as you know, he has many that do). This particular story was engrossing, exciting, funny, sad, and I could not wait to find out how it ends. How it ended was nothing short of a disspointment. It was as if Mr. Koontz realized he had only 2 pages of print left and had to end it fast. Right up until the very end it held me in its grips and then dropped me like a hot pototoe. I realize that not every book will be 5 Stars. But I feel it's only fair to spare someone the agoney I felt if possible. The same goes for Breathless -- just finished -- save your time. Read the Frankinstien Books instead.

I was a bit disappointed and some parts bored me to the point I had to skip over them in order to want to continue to read. However, it reminded me how much I love my own dogs, one who is part golden retriever. Page 344 gave me the chills, and I got teary-eyed during pages 324-325. Not Koontz's best, but far from his worst. I didn't connect with any character throughout the entire novel as I normally do when reading his novels.

This was a good read but not a great one. The story/plot was great but at times a little slow and the ending was disappointing. This was a good read but not one that you can't put down.
Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged. As I've said in several other reviews, I've been a Dean Koontz fan for a long time. I like his style of suspense novels, the way he builds tension, the way he writes his characters, and so on.
This book has some interesting and some suspenseful elements, but unfortunately it does not rise to the standards of Koontz classics like Lightning, Watchers, Whispers. The characters are very well done, as usual, but that's the book's only real strength.
The plot itself is very simplistic, much less complicated than usual for a Dean Koontz novel, and the story is much too slow to build up. Normally in a Koontz novel, something startling, supernatural, or surprising happens right away, and then you are on a rollercoaster ride of suspense for the rest of the book, unable to stop turning the pages until the ending. This time, however, the startling or surprising thing comes later, and is too subtle and vague to be quite as tension-building as usual. The plot took too long to develop.
If this had been a very long book, a slow-to-develop plot, although not typical of Koontz, might have been just fine. But unfortunately, just as he finishes developing to the story to the point where it's interesting, the book comes to its ending -- an ending that felt rushed and was distinctly unsatisfying.
I won't put any specifics here, since I don't want to spoil the surprises for people -- this book does have some surprises as most Koontz books do. But from where I sit many were predictable and thus not all that shocking, and the climax happened so fast I had to actually re-read the few pages at the end just to see if I missed something or if my Nook had messed up and skipped a bunch of pages (it didn't).
This book is fair, but not up to Koontz's usual standards. He has many better novels I would recommend ahead of this one. If you want to read one of his really good newer ones, I'd recommend The Good Guy or the Taking instead of this.

Dean Koontz is one of my favorite authors but this book is not up to his usual standard. The characters are flatter and you do not get the empathetic connection that is the hallmark of a Koontz read. Even the mystery of the dog is not well developed. Worst of all there is a sudden end to the action of the book that is followed by an epilog that seeks to tie up every loose end into the characters' middle age. One can almost see the publisher demanding clarification of these plot threads and Koontz sitting down and writing several paragraphs just to satisfy the requirement. If you love to read books with dogs then this could be a fun read. If you are looking for classic Koontz though give it a miss.
