Here is my review of both books. No spoilers involved.
I started and finished this series yesterday, I know. And, I'm still speechless and in awe of how much emotion I felt for these fictional characters. Claire Contreras BLEW MY MIND. I knew this would be a good read because of all of the recommendations I'd received for it from fellow book lovers, but I wasn't prepared for how much it would take over my life! I am consumed with thoughts about the books, I can't pick up another book, I can't sleep, I had to come into my office sit down (bang my head on the desk a little, and it's a glass desk!) and get it all out before moving on with my life (which really guys, it somehow seems impossible right now to continue living as I did before). I'm going to attempt to turn this into something productive and not just a gushy mushy love-fest on how you just need to skip everything I say AND GO BUY THE BOOKS YOURSELF.
    ATTEMPT #1:
    WOW...
    UMMM...
UNABLE TO FORM COHERENT SENTENCES AT THE MOMENT...
    K...
    ALMOST READY...
    PROCESSING...
When I began book one, There is No Light in Darkness, initially I was confused and flipping back and forth between new and old pages. I was rereading passages and trying to A. Figure out who was who and B. Figure out the whole story (because that's what I do). Umm.. Yeah. Claire Contreras is a SUPER SECRET SPY and you can't crack her code. No really. The way she unfolds events is on a mastery level that even I, avid reader and code cracker, was unable to pick. She shocks and overwhelms and then beats you on the head with the emotions pouring out of your chest! Just to do it all over again. The beginning was confusing, trying to figure out who was who, because Blake is a girl and Aubry is a guy and.. the way Claire constructs the introductions of everyone (or lack thereof, in the beginning) was mind boggling. Don't misread my feelings, I loved this and it was a fun start, diverse and kept me on my toes. Who needs to be spoon fed? We're all adults here. I went into the story blind, I feel like I'd read the synopsis before (like when I purchased book 1) but seeing as I don't know when I bought it, it could have been months ago. So, I didn't really know what I was getting into, just that I wanted to get into it. This book owns me right now, no exaggeration. I am pwned (no that's not a typo, it's a joke).
This series is dark and deep and a messy messy emotional battle. It's not a light and easy read; it's intense and real, so empty some space out of your heart because you will need it. These books will hold you prisoner until the very last page. It's heartbreaking, earth shattering, and a paranoid little disaster of a story with broken pieces that throughout the story find their place among the rubble. I can't put down in words how deep this book ran in me and I can only try to express my love for the darkness that emits from the pages and buried into me. These characters are now part of me, this phenomenal writer has written her words directly onto my mess of a heart.
Blake and Cole. Blake and Cole. Blake and Cole... Oh Goodness. I have this thing for best friends turned lovers. I mean seriously guys, I married my best friend. And, this is just the type of romance that I ADORE. This book is by far MY NEW FAVORITE love story. The beginning whole book gives me butterflies just thinking about it. Their easy banter, teasing, and sexual chemistry was enough to hook me until the very end. The jealousy that rivets and the make up sex that follows, ahh, so much awesomeness. This is romance done 100% right. The best!
Blake has this family, the people she loves that she can count on one hand. And, I loved them too. Through everything they're there for her and each other. They all drop everything and come together constantly. Stemming from broken homes and meeting in the life and loving arms of a woman with the biggest heart ever, they build their own unit and prosper greatly. There is no shortage of secondary characters and each one is just as important as the leads.
Surrounding this series, especially in book 2, is major drama. Like, criminal drama. Crazy stuff. Crazy bloodlines and suspense and just so much intense action and sadness. I cried big fat crazy person tears all alone while my husband would walk by and wonder what in the world was wrong with me. Then he'd walk by and see my laughing hysterically; and know I'd gone off the deep end. Oh man. I was a big huge mess.
I'm giving this series 5 million stars and I'm placing it on my favorite, reread and will never forget shelves in my head. I was, am, and will always be blown away by this series created by Claire Contreras and I am DEFINITELY going to be stalking/following/reading everything she writes-from now on.

This is the second book in the darkness series. You need to read

This is the second book in the darkness series. You need to read the first book (There Is No Light In Darkness) before you start this. This is one of my favorite series and it's a definite MUST read. The book is told from both Blake and Cole's POV's. Blake is being held captive by a man named Alex. She has lost all track of time and doesn't know how long she's been missing. Alex had ordered Dean to watch over her and she feel some sort of strange bond with him. Cole is lost without Blake and refuses to believe that she left him, like the police do. Cole meets with several people about helping find her and even makes a deal with the devil to do so. Through that deal he learns more and more about both their families and why they were taken as children. This book is written so well that it made my heart ache for Cole. Once they are reunited, Cole struggles to understand her relationship with Dean and Blake struggles with the consequences of her escape and her fear of being left alone. This story is jam packed with family secrets, lies and betrayals. The epilogue is one of my absolute favorites and is a beautiful ending to an amazing story.
    - "I meant every word that letter said, but it doesn't matter anymore. I have you now and neither of us is going anywhere. I loved you then, I love you now, and I'll love you always. You've always been it for me, Blake."

Darkness before Dawn is book 2 of the Darkness series. Must read

Darkness before Dawn is book 2 of the Darkness series. Must read book 1, There is No Light in Darkness before reading this one. Book 2 continues right where book 1 ends. The story is told in alternating povs of Blake and Cole. Questions are answered throughout the story explaining the events that happened in the past. Through the many twists and turns that are thrown at Blake and Cole they were able to do it together. What an engaging, gripping, emotional read that gives enough angst, mystery and romance. Highly recommend this book.

My thoughts┬┐ What a way to end a two book mini series. I loved

    My thoughts…

What a way to end a two book mini series. I loved this one as well. Cole has got to be one of my favorite book boyfriends EVER. He's simply amazing!

There are many twists and turns with this story that will keep you guessing on why things are the way they are. However, I recommend that you read the first book to know exactly what's going on with all the characters.

When you get to the very end I think you'll be surprised with how things turn out. I love a good suspenseful story and this one didn't disappoint.

The sexual elements in this one are comparable to adult mainstream. I don't think they were as steamy as the first book, but having said that the scenes were well written and still hot.

There were a few times that I thought Blake went a little bit overboard with her emotions. I couldn't understand why she would doubt Cole's love for her. Like I said before Cole is amazing. I really loved him.

Overall this is one of the best series I've read so far this year. Ms. Contreras has gained a new fan for sure. I really like her writing style and hope to read her future works.

First can I start with Claire Contreras is a damn genius! This story is so well written with so many twist and turns and end the end having you saying WHAT!!! If you have not read There is No Light Before Darkness, what are you waiting for?!?! This series is full of suspense, romance, and the hotness that is Cole Murphy… enough said right there! Cole… Cole… Cole… You have to get to know this one… he’s hot, he’s smart, and always gentlemen. I love that the book rotates POV from Blake to Cole. Nothing like getting into a man’s head!

So… we start off right were the last book ends. Blake has been kidnapped. She awakes to a small room that has only a mattress, a small 80’s era TV and a bathroom. She is bruised and beaten but still hold onto her love for Cole that she will find a way out. She recognizes her captors from her past but a new face is the one that will end up befriending her. Enter Dean… he’s part of the drug cartel that is keeping her hostage but has the pretty boy face but has some edge to him that intrigues Blake. He is not like the others and is actually kind to her. With his help Blake is able to escape her captures. But with this brings more questions about her and Cole’s disappearance many years before.

While Blake is in captive, Cole struggles to find answers to her disappearance. He then reaches out to the one person that can give him answers, the one person he hates that he has to turn to, his Father. Cole finally comes face to face with his parents. With this more lies and deceit are exposed and more OMG moments are revealed!

Once Blake is free, she and Cole struggle to find their way as she continues to reach out to Dean. But with this Blake is able to help piece together the puzzle that is her and Cole’s life and the mystery behind their disappearance. Will they be able to work past their struggles? Can Cole work past the new relationship she tries to build with Dean? Or will their families’ lies and deceit be the end of their relationship? You will have to read to find out!

There are just so many moments in this book where I could not stop turning the page! We even get a cameo from Jack Fn’ Carter!! Cole and Jack in the same book!!! Be still my heart!!! My heart was racing, and my jaw dropped on more than one occasion. I love Cole even more in the book and commend the author for growing her writing process as this book, I feel, is exceptional! I LOVED… LOVED… LOVED this book and sad that this is the end of their story!

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book...

“Blake is everything to me. She’s not somebody I’m involved with, she is my reason, my everything”

“We both stare at each other for a long moment, with tears in our eyes, before his arms swallow my body in his, shielding me from everything; the light, the dark, and everything in between”

“In this moment I realize that I’m not sure how long I’d been kidnapped, but nothing, nobody, can hold me hostage like Cole’s eyes can.”

“My sould belongs to you , Blake. I got where you go, I cant live without you. I don’t want to live without you. If you die tomorrow, I die with you.” (omg… so swooning!!!)

“Love is knowing that one day when I’m old and my body aches, my heart won’t because I’ll be with you.” (sigh……)

    4.5 stars
I have to admit that when I read There is No Light in Darkness, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a story and cast that I fell in love with. You know how sometimes you read a book, you're impressed, you move on...but those characters linger in your mind? Well, this was one of those books for me. It ended in a HUGE cliffhanger and left me anxiously waiting for Darkness Before Dawn. I'm pleased to say that this book was everything I'd hoped for.

It's really hard for me to dive into a character analysis, because this story is complex. Plus, I really don't want to give much about the story away. So, what I'll tell you is that I loved these characters even MORE than I did in the first book. I loved getting Cole's POV in this book. He is truly one of my favorite male characters. I fell pretty hard for Cole in the first book, but in this book...umph. He takes such good care of Blake. He's passionately in love with her, has a wonderfully dirty mouth, and he made me laugh and tear up. He's perfect.

And Blake...she's a tough chick. She's lived a difficult life, but found support in her friendships she made while in foster care.  In this book, my heart went out to Blake. She learns more about her family and the reasons why she was taken from them as a child. The family secrets nearly crushed her, but with the support of her friends and her will to move forward, she found peace.

I loved the supporting characters as well. I loved the original supporting cast just as much as I did in the first book, but I loved getting to meet the new characters. Connor is Blake's cousin and he is woven into this twisted situation, but he and Blake are able to form a good relationship. I also like Dean. I was skeptical of him at first, but he really turned about to be a hero for Blake.

As for the story, I got the answers I needed and there were a few new surprises along the way. One thing is certain, this book kept me on my toes. When I wasn't reading, I was thinking about it. There are some intense moments, sad moments, and most definitely some sexy moments. I was thrilled with the way the story ended. Despite all the trauma that both Cole and Blake suffered in their lives, their love for each other won in the end. They are a great couple and will remain one of my favorites. I highly recommend this series.

    Quotes:
~"Blake is everything to me. She's not somebody I'm involved with, she's my reason, my everything," I say calmly.-Loc 871

~"I loved you then, I love you now, and I'll love you always. You've always been it for me, Blake."-Loc 1696

~All thoughts of who may or may not be my family vanishes when I look into his green eyes, because he's my family. My home.-Loc 3962
