I loved this novel. I didn’t want it to end. Darkness,

I loved this novel. I didn’t want it to end. Darkness, starts right where the first novel, Laney, ended. The transition from Laney to Darkness, was so smoothly done, that it felt like I was reading another chapter in Laney.

When I think of the events that took place in Darkness, the first word that comes to mind is emotional. This novel is quite emotional, as the main character, Laney, experiences a whirlwind of emotions: fear, love, anger, heart-break and grief.

She learns what it would be like to be part of a vampire family; she learns more about her friends; and she learns more about Oliver. Laney has so much information to process, that at times it becomes overwhelming for her.

Julz causes Laney a great deal of stress. When a secret of Julz’s is revealed, I was in complete shock; it was something I never saw coming. I love the twists and turns that author, Joann I. Martin Sowles creates. I have said this before: one of the things that I love about Joann’s writing is how she scatters little clues throughout her novels. A character will start to say something then stop, or get interrupted, and I will be left thinking: does that mean what I think it means; could it be; is that possible? I enjoy how Joann writes in a way that lets the reader use their imagination to create theories and possibilities.

I felt that it was very easy to understand Laney. She is going through so much, and is at times overwhelmed, confused and sad. I could understand why she was feeling the way she was, and why she made the choices that she did. She pulls away from Oliver in this novel and I can understand why she did.

Oliver – Oliver was a bit of a mystery in Darkness, and I really liked that. A different side to him is revealed, and while I was definitely angry with him at times, I enjoyed the mystery that surrounded him. I didn’t know what he was thinking sometimes.

Early on in the story something happens to one of the characters, and I was shocked by Oliver’s response. I was so caught up in the story that I wanted to jump into the novel and slap some sense into him.

I loved the presence of Carter in this novel. I don’t want to say too much about him, as I don’t want to give anything away. I’ll just say that more is revealed about Carter and his family. I did miss the friendship between Kiera and Laney a little, but I understood why Kiera was not as present in Darkness, as she was in this first novel, Laney. Laney spends the majority of her time at Julz’s home – a place that Kiera cannot be. Laney is discovering more about life with vampires, and deciding if that is the life she truly wants, and at the moment these are topics that she can’t discuss with Kiera.

I’m also a little suspicious of Hayden. I don’t know if I completely trust her. A few times I thought to myself: why did she do that? I also have a feeling that Oliver may be hiding something from Laney. I just don’t know what it could possibly be. I can’t wait to read the next installment in The Brookehaven Vampires series.

Friendship, love, heart-break, mystery and romance collide in Darkness, creating a memorable and captivating story. With so many unexpected moments, I was eagerly turning the pages, wanting to know what would happen next. A fantastic novel.

    4.5/5

*Thank you to Joann I. Martin Sowles for providing me with a copy of Darkness to review.

    Good second book

This was a good second book. It was kind of long and didn't seem to climax much, but the romance was pretty good. It got a little old with the making out always getting interupted, but maybe book 3 will solve this problem for us. This book had a few sad parts that brought a few tears. Great book for older teens and adults since it deals with college and older instead of high school.

Great 2nd book! I wasn't sure where Sowles would take the story

    Great 2nd book!
I wasn't sure where Sowles would take the story but it was another page-turner. In my review of the first book, I said that I liked the characters' development and emotional story - and this goes further along that path. I really enjoyed the development of the other characters (and Laney's relationship with Lola is so sweet). Especially Carter, Felix, and Hayden This book is an emotional roller-coaster - but in a good way. Laney has to deal with a lot in a short period of time, but again she is not so self-absorbed to realize that her friends (and even those she doesn't like) are also going through their own stuff. In the end, we all just want to be comforted when we are hurting. This book could have really dragged if not handled well; but I found her so accessible and realistic that it didn't. There are times that she does stupid things, but they are usually out of grief or anger. She's not a "smack yourself in the forehead-stupid" heroine. And there is a whole background element of "what is really going on here?" to provide intrigue. Waiting for the third book!

Again, I feel that this is more suitable for older teens/young adults, as some of the situations and issues are on the mature side.

    A Dedicated Book Reader:)

This book, in my opinion was well thought out, and put together, just as amazing as the first. You should not skip this book in the series under any circumstances, it gives you more knowledge of all the characters in this series, surprising scenes and exitement. If you miss out on this book in the series, you would have no clue why the characters feel the way they do in the next one. I beleive this book is well worth reading and you'll find yourself in more exiting twist and turns, just like the one before, so after the first book, pick up this one next in the series, you might find you love it. I know i did.

Good read, but no where near as good as the first.

Okay, I really loved the first book Laney. Darkness didn't quite meet my expectations. Laney was all over the place with her emotions. Which became really irritating. I really felt for Oliver mostly in this one. There was a few cute Oliver and Laney moments. But lacked the action packed chase we got from the first book. I was really hoping Laney would finally discover something about herself. When you are crazy in love you can over look odd things about your boyfriend. But constantly Laney had these odd things popping up in her life and she never once took a real moment to ponder anything about herself or her family. I couldn't figure out why. With all of that said this book leads you to a lot more questions that I hope will get a least a few answers in the next or at least have Laney question why she seems so different. I'm definitely looking foward to the next book and hope Laney will be put in a little more danger and maybe we will get a few answers to some somewhat obvious questions.

    AWESOME READ....

This is the 2nd book in the Brookehaven seris. Just like the 1st book (Laney) I could not put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen next. The Author describes everything in such detail that I feel like I am right there. If you like vampires then this is a MUST READ.

    Really bummed out!

OK. You have to know how hard it is for me to give this book 2 stars! When Laney came out I was in love! I had all my friends reading it, I was watching everyday for this book! So when I got it I was so excited! I stopped everything I was doing to read. I wish I hadn't! There was no climax in this book! Nothing that made you go WHAT NO!! I sat around after with my friends trying to decide what the climax was in Joanns mind because this book was so boring! Laney was so winey and depressed and angry in the whole book I couldn't stand her! However with that being said this book won't stop me from reading the next one because I do think the next will be good. (nothing really happen in this one so everything's got to go down in the next one right?) What I would tell people is for sure read the first skip the second nothing really happens and read the third. SPOILER - The only thing you find out in this book is why Julz and Oliver are connected and what happens to Carter and something happens to her aunt.

Since reading the first book, I knew I wanted to read the second

Since reading the first book, I knew I wanted to read the second. It was good, but some of the plot twist failed to grab me.

Plot: This plot pretty much follows the same formula as the first with some slight differences. It’s enjoyable with lots of drama and secrets. It definitely has appeal but some areas lack for me…like the love.

Love: UGH! What can I say other than it read like an very dramatic novella. The main character Laney is super whiny and always complaining about something. And Oliver, don’t get me started on him. He lied over and over and Laney just kept on acting surprised. Like, really chick?! I can read him like the back of my hand. He is no good. There are just several things that upsetted me.

Ending: The ending ends well with of course lots to go on for the next book. I might pick up the next in hopes that things will change with Laney and Oliver.

Overall, this is good. It totally didn’t capture me the way the first book did, but its okay. Darkness is good.

    Wonderful book!

The only thing is I wish it was close to the 2,000 pages that the first one was. This one was half that at almost 1,000. But still longer than most! Love this series and hope that the 3rd will be out soon!!!

Can't Wait to see the Rest of the Story

Review brought to you by OBS staff member Angie

Darkness by Joann Martin Sowles is the second installment in The Brookehaven Vampire Series. In the previous book, Laney, we met the main characters Laney, Oliver, Carter, Kiera, Julz, Felix, Issac, and Hailey. Darkness picks up LITERALLY right where Laney left off. If it’s been a while since you read Laney I recommend that you refresh yourself. I found myself having to go back and re-read a few chapters to catch up.

We pick up with Laney and Oliver having escaped the fight and they are now in hiding. Oliver has taken Laney back to Julz and Issac’s for safekeeping. Julz is not at all happy to have Laney there and she has no problem letting everyone know. You could cut the tension with a knife… or a letter opener… just saying (wink).

Carter was bitten by a werewolf in the incident and no one is quite sure what will happen when the moon is full. While he heals, he is staying at Julz’s as well. Add Felix into the mix for extra protection and there’s quite a houseful. The college has been closed until further notice so Laney and Oliver get a lot of alone time together. Oliver is determined to bond with Laney and she is determined to allow it to happen, but with that many folks in the house will they ever get any privacy?

Without giving away any spoilers I’ll just tell you to have your kleenex handy. There were so many emotional moments for me. And not just the sappy ones, but the sexy ones and the funny ones. Sowles writes the sexual tension in a brilliant way. I could feel the ache that Laney was experiencing (yay for the hubster!) and was eager to see Laney and Oliver take their relationship to the next level.

There is a scene with Laney and Carter that had me giggling like a maniac …and craving Peppermint Schnapps!! Ahhh to be young and carefree and drunk!

Once again Sowles has left me eager for “the rest of the story” and I can’t wait until Book 3 comes out.

    I LOVE this series!!!!

This book will grab you from the start. It picks up right where Laney left off so I suggest reading that first so you are not lost in Darkness.

After everything Laney and Oliver have gone through it seems like things will slow down and give them a break but author Joann has other things planned for them. Laney goes through dealing with the death of someone close to her and an attack on a close friend. In the process of it she places the blame on Oliver and pushes him away. Although my heart broke for Laney at this loss and everything she is going through I also wanted to scream at her for the way she treated Oliver.

Joann is good about dropping hints through out the book so the reader can figure them out and some had me going yes I am right. Where others had me going what?! Joann writing pulls the reader in to Laney and Oliver’s world and makes me feel everything with them and the other characters. I have no complaints about this book expect it was over to fast.

If you want a book that leaves you breathless and wanting your very own green eyed vampire than this book is for you. I can not wait for the next book in this amazing series. Joann is one of my must buy authors and if you read her books she will become one of yours.
