Freak. Witch. Crazy. Schizo.

Ember Brycin has been called them all. She's always known she's different. No one has ever called her normal, even under the best circumstances. Bizarre and inexplicable things continually happen to her, and having two different colored eyes, strange hair, and an unusual tattoo only contributes to the gossip about her.

When the latest school explosion lands her in a facility for trouble teens, she meets Eli Dragen, who's hot as hell and darkly mysterious. Their connection is full of passion, danger, and secrets. Secrets that will not only change her life, but what and who she is-leading her down a path she never imagined possible.

Between Light and Dark, Ember finds a world where truth and knowledge are power and no one can be trusted. But her survival depends on finding out the truth about herself. In her pursuit, she is forced between love and destiny and good and evil, even when the differences between them aren't always clear. At worst, she will incite a war that could destroy both worlds. At best, she will not only lose her heart but her life and everyone she loves. Once the truth is out, however, there will be no going back. And she'll definitely wish she could.

Meet the Author

Stacey Marie Brown by day is an Interior/Set Designer, by night a writer of Paranormal Fantasy, Adventure, and Literary Fiction. She grew up in Northern California, where she ran around on her family's farm, raising animals, riding horses, playing flashlight tag, and turning hay bales into cool forts. Even before she could write, she was creating stories and making up intricate fantasies. Writing came as easy as breathing. She later turned that passion into acting, living and traveling abroad, and designing. Though she had never stopped writing, moving back to San Francisco seemed to have brought it back to the forefront and this time it would not be ignored.

When she's not writing she's out hiking, spending time with friends, traveling, listening to music, or designing.

While I like the (free) book, if I had know that it would stop where it did and it was the first in a series, I wouldn't have read it! Story gets 4 stars but the cliff-hanger drops my rating!

This book was absolutely awesome! The story between Ember and Eli was like stoking a fire to get the low glow to become a blazing fire. The book had me guessing until the end about Ember and what secret Eli was keeping from her. There is still much more to read in this series and I can't wait to get my hands in he next book!!! Stacey did an awesome job and had me glued to the pages! Brava!

It's official! I am now addicted to the Darkness series! If I had been in the position of reading this and then waiting months for its sequel, I would have reread this book again . . . .and again . . .and again! Ember isn't an ordinary girl, but she is unable to control her powers, which are regulated by her emotions. It is the knowledge that she is different and our curiosity about her identity which keeps us turning the pages. This is not a story in which Stacey Marie Brown ever allows her reader to relax. Her writing is fast-paced and there is always the threat of 'something else', even when Ember is dreaming. Ember is a fantastic character who I immediately loved! She cares deeply for her dad, Mark, and her friends, but refuses to be babied, and her sassiness makes for some hilarious moments, particularly when Eli is around! Oh Eli, where do I begin with you? Hot, seductive, sexy, stubborn and enigmatic! There is a sexual tension between Eli and ember which makes the pages sizzle and they tag team with innuendos and insults - Ember giving as good as she gets. After Ember is attacked in the woods and nearly loses her life, the connection between the pair deepens, as Eli steps in to help her heal, but the repercussions of this are wider reaching than anyone could have predicted. The story ends with revelations and tragedy and Ember is in the centre of it all, but she is already a character we have taken to our hearts and the urgent need to find out she is safe makes us reach immediately for Fire in the Darkness. Brilliant writing, awesome characters, humor and a spellbinding plot. Perfect! I received this as a complimentary review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.

**I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review** Ember has lived in Olympia, Washington for 5 years. Ember has been hearing voices and seeing things that shouldn't exist for years. She also has two different colored eyes: one is a bright yellow and the other is a pale blue lavender. Ember's mom died 5 years ago and she was being raised by her step-father Martin. Ben Harris is a basketball star who was gorgeous and sat next to her in class. Kellie Parsons is a popular cheerleader. She and most of the school were afraid of Ember. Kellie has become really cruel since Ember and Ben became friends. Ember loses a bet and has to go to the school dance. Ember became upset and things in the gym started exploding. The principal asked her why things were exploding and planned on finding out why. Ember was made to go to Silverwood. Between the principal and sheriff she had no choice. At Silverwood one of her leaders was Eli Dragen. She had seen him at the sheriff's office handcuffed to a chair. Eli has a very strange affect on Ember. Eli saves Ember from going to jail but the sheriff puts in a complaint to Silverwood. She and Eli end up having to teach a rope class together. Eli is in a motorcycle club called the Riders of Darkness. Eli is a complex character who, against his better judgement, is protective of Ember and has a reluctant attraction and feelings towards her, even though he shouldn't. Ember is troubled by the fact that she has these powers and that she has been causing these problems with them. She is also attracted to Eli, but tore between the back and forth of their relationship. My heart went out to her with the conflict she is dealing with. I really enjoyed the story and would recommend it.

This series is just okay. I suggest her other series-City of Embers. I read this series after reading that one and it just doesn't compare for me. Though the characters are almost identical in many ways, I just couldn't get into like I did with the other. Maybe I would have liked it better if I hadn't read the other first, whose characters were awesome and funny, and much more badass then these. I think I should have taken a break between the two different series because I was comparing too much-in any case, still a good read.

Reviewed by Chris Fischer for Readers' Favorite Wow! That's the first thought I had when I finished reading Darkness of Light, the first book in the Darkness series by author Stacey Marie Brown. Follow the story of Ember Brycin, the unique and strong protagonist of our story, as she learns about her own powers, discovers a world she had no idea existed, and falls for a guy she hardly could have imagined. When Ember meets the enigmatic Eli Dragen, both sparks and secrets fly. He leads her on a path of discovery, about herself, about a world she didn't know existed, and through a journey she has to take to save herself and both worlds that she's come to care about. This is a fantastic book. I'm not sure how else to say it. Darkness of Light was a book that I read from start to finish all in one session; I just could not put it down. Fun, funny, and an absolute thrill ride of a read, this book will have you turning the pages from start to finish. I love a paranormal read led by a kick butt female, and we definitely have that in Ember Bryce. Author Stacey Marie Brown has done a fantastic job in creating realistic and relatable characters and exciting and fantastic worlds, just what readers of paranormal fiction are looking for. Any reader who loves paranormal fiction, romance, action or suspense would enjoy Darkness of Light. I recommend author Stacey Marie Brown's work, and am certainly looking forward to reading the next installment in this series as soon as I possibly can.

Ember is an 18 YO young woman trying to finish HS but things just seem to happen around her. She's kicked out of her school and has to attend an 'alternative' school in order to graduate. She meets Eli, and from there her world gradually begins to change. There is an attraction between them and he is both drawn to her and tries to resist. Added to that, there is potentially a triangle relationship - she has very realistic dreams where she meets up with Torin and she is very attracted to him. In the end, Ember learns who and what she is, as well as all those around her. A cliff hanger ending that makes me want to immediately pick up book 2. No doubt this series will be very readable, highly entertaining, and completely enjoyable. If you're looking for a new author, a new series, or just an enjoyable story I can highly recommend this one.

Darkness of Light (Darkness #1) by Stacey Marie Brown Ember Brycin has never been normal.  She has at no time felt that she fit in.  She has two different colored eyes and hair.  Plus strange things happen around her.  After being accused of blowing up the gym at a school dance, she is forced to transfers to a school for troubled teens.  It is there she meets Eli Dragen; he is dark and mysterious and full of secrets, some of them involving her.  I enjoyed Ember’s character.  She is feisty and strong spirited.  She is relentless when it comes to finding out information.   She doesn’t have a lot of friends but is loyal to the ones she has.  My heart went out to her for all the terrible things she has had to endure.  Eli is the perfect bad boy.  His personality keeps you guessing.  It is obvious he is hiding something, and  you’re never sure if he could be trusted.  I enjoyed the tension between Ember and Eli.  The conversations between the two kept me laughing.  They absolutely have perfected the battle of wits against each other.  They have an interesting chemistry that makes the story entertaining. The plot is well done and very mysterious.  I’m really glad I already have the second book and could  dive right into it.  I can’t wait to see what happens next.  Complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review.
