Overview

James Decker just won’t stay dead. Slain while rescuing a young woman from a would-be rapist, he finds himself in a pseudo-life, caught between two realities, belonging to neither.

Haunted by the ghosts of his father and grandfather, he learns that the woman he rescued is in fact an Innocent, the physical embodiment of hope. As it turns out, seeing dead people is the least of James' worries. It's the trolls, goblins, vampires, and other assorted creepy-crawlies that make being dead a living nightmare.

When a Madness Demon kidnaps the Innocent to sacrifice at the Blood Moon ritual, it's up to James and an odd assortment of Otherworld companions to rescue her. If they fail, humanity will be without hope for the next thousand years.

To succeed, James must first battle his own inner demons, and come to grips with who and what he has become. After all, when you're dead, wishing you were is kind of counter-productive.

S.K.S. Perry is a Sgt currently serving in his 33rd year in the Canadian Armed Forces. He has a lovely wife, two great kids, and a house full of teddy bears that totally put lie to his tough guy image. When no one is looking he’s also a drummer in a rock band, and holds black belts in seven different martial arts. His plan is to one day be independently wealthy, or even dependently wealthy—he doesn’t really care whose money it is as long as they let him spend it. He has written five books to date and plans to write more—unless someone pays him enough to stop.

This book was a fantastic read. It's a unique take on the fantasy genre with something for everyone. I loved how humorous and self deprecating the main character narrates. Absolutely no pretension in S.K.S. Perry's writing! I can't wait to start the second book...

Reviewed by Leah Gonzalez for Readers' Favorite One night, James Decker gets killed while saving a young girl. Problem is, he doesn't stay dead--he's an Eternal--and starts seeing all sorts of supernatural beings, including the ghosts of his dead grandpa, his long-dead dad, and his dead girlfriend. The young girl he saved, Alex, turns out to be the daughter of a shapeshifter and a Sensitive. She also happens to be an Innocent, the embodiment of Hope, and needs to be protected against evil creatures who want to corrupt her and, in the process, destroy hope for all humanity. While Decker navigates the rules of the supernatural world and learns the ropes of being an Eternal, he and his new-found friends — a shapeshifter, a vampire, an ogre, a bard, and a troll — go on a dangerous adventure to save the Innocent and save the world. "Darkside" is a fun and interesting fantasy. The writing is smart, witty, funny, and so unlike most fantasies these days that it's refreshing. The story flows easily and in a very fast pace. You also have a diverse and interesting cast of characters. The story is told from the perspective of the main character, James Decker, who is a very likeable protagonist. His odd assortment of friends are very different from each other and are likeable in their own ways. This makes things even more interesting. There isn’t a dull moment during the entire book. Although I would have liked to see a few more back stories about the supernatural world, the history of Eternals and the characters, the story was fun and enjoyable enough.

Like it says above, just download a sample. I did and I got drawn in pretty quickly. And for ninety-nine cents can you really go wrong? And I love anything having to do with the Fae. So download it.
