Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
As part of the "Heroes of Racing" series, this is an interesting read for race fans of all ages. While obviously designed for younger readers, the biography of one of racing's iconic figures is enjoyable for mom and dad as well. Starting with a horrific crash on the eve of his 500th race, the story turns to the roots of the Waltrip family. It was Darrell Waltrip's grandmother who brought young Waltrip with her to the stock car track in Owensboro, Kentucky, but it was his father who helped him build and maintain the go-karts that hooked him on racing. Before long, "The Wild Child," as he named himself, was driving to area stock car tracks whenever he was not causing trouble in Owensboro. Despite his bad boy status, Stephanie Rader fell in love with Waltrip, and, against the better judgment of her parents, she married him and has supported him throughout his career. Waltrip drove to three NASCAR championships in the then Winston Cup series. The story of how he moved around the teams and came to realize his own weaknesses makes this a great read for young people. Although Waltrip is best known today for his work in the announcer's booth, this biography recounts how he got there with hard work, good timing, and the support of some equally dedicated people. This series will be a good choice for middle and high school libraries. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
