Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cindy L. Carolan
Best friends Liam and Tej have decided to take an old logging road over the mountain to avoid an accident that they believe will take forever to get around. This is a big mistake, they discover after the truck in which they are driving goes over the edge, flipping an indeterminate number of times. It appears that is the least of their worries though, when they encounter a grizzly bear! Tensions rise when Tej breaks his leg and Liam has to strike out on his own to secure any chance of being rescued. There are interesting exchanges between the boys. Although they have been best friends since early childhood and are very close, they harbor a fair amount of animosity toward each other. Part of the "Orca Soundings" series (teen fiction for reluctant readers) that includes such titles as The Hemingway Tradition, Dead-End Job, and Fastback Beach. The author lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, and also wrote Red Sea, an ALA Best Book. Highly recommended for the intended age group.

The bear lowers its head. When a dog looks like this, it means you could get bitten. When a bear looks like this, it means you could be lunch. The bear's eyes harden, as if he has lost patience with us. We're on his trail and he wants us off. The bear opens his jaws. Big jaws. Really big teeth. His jaws make a smacking sound.

I whisper, "He's going to eat us."
