Overview

To mark the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, and the 15Oth anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of the Species, the Society for the History of Natural History's special publication Darwin in the Archives reproduces in facsimile papers about Erasmus and Charles Darwin which were published in its internationally renowned journal before 2005 (from the journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History and Archives of Natural History). Also included here in facsimile is Charles Darwin's Questions About the Breeding of Animals (1840), with an introduction by Sir Gavin de Beer (previously published as Sherborn Facsimile no 3). This volume opens with a specially commissioned essay by Professor Duncan M. Porter recounting the Society's particular contribution to Darwin scholarship.

The Society for the History of Natural History promotes the history and bibliography of all branches of natural history in all periods and cultures. This includes botany, general biology, geology, palaeontology and zoology; the lives of naturalists, their publications, correspondence and collections, and the institutions and societies to which they belonged. Bibliographical studies of rare books, manuscripts and illustrative material are also included.

Membership is open to anyone interested in the objectives of the Society. The principal benefit of membership is receipt of the international journal Archives of Natural History (published for the Society by Edinburgh University Press). A Newsletter is issued three times a year. The Society also organizes meetings, conferences and visits to places of interest to its members. International activities are promoted by the Society's Representatives.

The Society for the History of Natural History is a registered charity in England and Wales, no. 210355.
