Oscar Wilde
Oscar (Fingal O'Flahertie Wills) Wilde (1854 - 1900) wurde als zweiter Sohn des Arztes William R. W. Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee in Dublin geboren. Er studierte in Oxford klassische Literatur, zog später nach London und gehörte bald zu den stadtbekannten Dandys. 1884 heiratete er Constance Lloyd, mit der er zwei Söhne hatte. Die Veröffentlichung seines Romans "Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray" löste 1890/91 einen Skandal aus. Die Aufführung seines Bühnenstücks "Salomé" wurde 1892 in London verboten. Als Dramatiker gelang ihm 1895 der Durchbruch mit "Bunbury", aber noch im selben Jahr wurde er wegen seiner Liebesbeziehung zu Lord Alfred Douglas in einen verhängnisvollen Prozess mit dessen Vater verwickelt: Sein Besitz wurde zwangsversteigert und Oscar Wilde wurde zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Am Tag der Entlassung reiste er unter falschem Namen ("Sebastian Melmoth") nach Frankreich und kehrte nie wieder nach Großbritannien zurück. Er starb am 30. November 1900 an den Folgen einer Mittelohrentzündung.
