Overview

From beloved mother-daughter duo Mary Higgins Clark, America's Queen of Suspense, and Carol Higgins Clark, author of the hugely popular Regan Reilly mystery series, comes Dashing Through the Snow, a holiday treat you won't want to miss.

In the picturesque village of Branscombe, New Hampshire, the townsfolk are all pitching in to prepare for the first (and many hope annual) Festival of Joy. The night before the festival begins, a group of employees at the local market learn that they have won $160 million in the lottery. One of their co-workers, Duncan, decided at the last minute, on the advice of a pair of crooks masquerading as financial advisers, not to play. Then he goes missing. A second winning lottery ticket was purchased in the next town, but the winner hasn't come forward. Could Duncan have secretly bought it?

The Clarks' endearing heroes -- Alvirah Meehan, the amateur sleuth, and private investigator Regan Reilly -- have arrived in Branscombe for the festival. They are just the people to find out what is amiss. As they dig beneath the surface, they find that life in Branscombe is not as tranquil as it appears. So much for an old-fashioned weekend in the country. This fast-paced holiday caper will keep you dashing through the pages!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

The festive fifth holiday mystery from the bestselling mother-daughter Clarks (after 2006's Santa Cruise) focuses on a wish-fulfillment theme many Americans dream about-winning a fortune in the lottery. As Christmas approaches, the folks of Branscombe, N.H., are celebrating their first "Festival of Joy." Visiting from New York City are novelist Nora Regan Reilly and her PI daughter, Regan Reilly, and their close friends Alvirah and Will Meehan, who won $40 million in the lottery a few years earlier. When four employees of Conklin's Market win $160 million using numbers supplied by their associate Duncan Graham, they decide to share their winnings with Duncan. Duncan, alas, has vanished. The Reillys and Meehans soon get on a trail of intrigue involving an abduction, thieves, con men and a second winning lottery ticket. Though the plotting and the characterization can be as thin as early winter ice, this trifle still rates a cheerful ho ho ho. (Nov. 18)

Biography

The Queen of Suspense, Bronx-born and -bred Mary Higgins Clark has achieved international success against heavy odds. Her father died when she was 11, and her mother struggled to raise and provide for Mary and her two brothers. Clark attended secretarial school after high school and worked for three years in an advertising agency before leaving to become a stewardess for Pan American Airlines. Throughout 1949, she flew international flights to Europe, Africa, and Asia. " I was in a revolution in Syria and on the last flight into Czechoslovakia before the Iron Curtain went down," she recalls. In 1950, she quit her job to marry Warren Clark, a neighbor nine years her senior whom she had known and admired since she was 16.

In the early years of her marriage, Clark began writing short stories, making her first sale in 1956 to Extension Magazine. Between writing and raising a family, the decade flew by. Then, in 1964, Warren Clark suffered a fatal heart attack, leaving his young widow with five children to support. She went to work writing radio scripts; and, around this time, she decided to try her hand at writing books. Inspired by a radio series she was working on, she drafted a biographical novel about George Washington. It was published in 1969 under the title Aspire to the Heavens. (In 2002, it was re-issued as Mount Vernon Love Story.) Her first suspense novel, Where Are the Children?, appeared in print in 1975. It was a huge hit and marked a turning point in her life. Since then, she has developed a loyal fan base, and each of her novels has hit the bestseller lists. She has also co-written stories and novels with her daughter Carol, a successful author in her own right.

In the 1970s, Clark enrolled in Fordham University at Lincoln Center, graduating summa cum laude in 1979. A great supporter of education, she has served as a trustee of her alma mater and Providence College and holds numerous honorary degrees. She remains active in Catholic affairs and has been honored with many awards. Her publisher, Simon & Schuster, funds an annual award in her name to be given to authors of suspense fiction writing in the Mary Higgins Clark tradition.

The latest holiday collaboration between the great mother and daughter queens of suspense is a fun tale

In Branscombe, New Hampshire, the townsfolk are excited and volunteering as the village prepares for its first ever Festival of Joy with plans to hold annual galas. Visitors are expected from the rest of New England and especially New York. In fact novelist Nora Regan Reilly and her daughter private investigator Regan Reilly accompanied by their close friends Alvirah and Will Meehan, are in town for the event.<BR/><BR/>On the night before the opening ceremony, four employees of Conklin's Market win $160 million in the lottery. The Meehans especially understand the joy and pitfalls of lottery winnings as they won $40 million a few years ago. The grateful quartet agrees to share their new wealth with a fifth employee of the store, Duncan Graham who provided the winning numbers at the last moment declined participation on the advice of financial advisors. When they go to tell him what they want to do to thank him, the foursome finds him missing. The NYC visiting quartet begins to investigate a strange trail of cons and lottery winners.<BR/><BR/>The latest holiday collaboration between the great mother and daughter queens of suspense is a fun tale that focuses on lottery winnings. As with the previous adventures (see SANTA CRUISE and THE CHRISTMAS THIEF) Carol Higgins Clark¿s sleuth Regan Reilly is the lead investigator assisted by her retinue. The story line is razor thin, but no one will care as fans will enjoy DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW of New Hampshire along side Regan, her mom and their friends.<BR/><BR/>Harriet Klausner

    The Higgens girls

I won't give the plot away. Just to say it's another uplifting read and if you like this author, by all means don't wait for it to come to your library. Romance, believable characters and intriguing plot make it four stars. I left one off because I thought the cover was a little too Higginsonian, hardly room for the title.

So I'm a Clark Fan, But...

I really enjoy Mary Higgins Clark's books, so I picked up this one for the holidays. I was a little disappointed though. It wasn't a bad book, it was just average. If you havn't read any other of Mary Higgins Clark's books then this is a good read! But after reading some of her really interesting and creative novels, I wasn't as thrilled. The book takes place in New Hampshere, that's a problem from the start. The characters are quite "hicky", and I don't think they gave enough excitement. They just seemed like idiots. (Not putting down NH, just the stereotype [I live in NH).
However, I'm still glad I picked this book up because it was something good for the holiday season. My Christmas would have a different essence (not to sound weird..) if I hadn't read this. Its a relaxing, but still thrilling book.

Check this out from the library first.

The early books introducing Regan Reilly were more suspenseful than the most recent ones. Still this book would be good to read on a rainy day and is enjoyable as a cozy mystery, although I didn't rate it as one. For those who don't prefer cozy mysteries, check this out from the library before buying it.

Enjoy reading their books as they are fast paced and you can complete them in one sitting. Fun Holiday reading

I've read some scathing reviews of this book, but I actually really enjoyed it. I'm not a regular Mary Higgins Clark fan, but I read the Santa Cruise last Christmas, and really enjoyed that book.<BR/>It was a very quick read..finished it in 3 days.<BR/>One of the twists with the characters left me scratching my head..so maybe that accounts for the reviews on the book, but i enjoyed it!<BR/>Well worth a read for a quick, holiday mystery.

Carol Higgins Clark slow writing style and the same old ideas. I might read another book written with her daughter but only if I had absolutely nothing ,and I mean nothing, else to do.
