VOYA - Lauri J. Vaughan
With the exception of the Dating and Relationships (which features eight chapters), the slim volumes in the "Young Man's Guide to Contemporary Issues" series cover content with a brief introduction followed by five topical chapters, a glossary, information sources, further reading, a bibliography and an index. The content of all four books is straight-forward, authentic, and non-pedantic. Dating and Relationships starts off with a worthy chapter about stereotypes before launching into a section entitled "Friendships and ?Enemyships.'" Clearly, the goal is to cover all kinds of relationships in the life of a young man, rather than just the romantic variety. The series' willingness to leave the decision-making to the reader is evident throughout. A Guy's Guide to Sexuality and Sexual Identity in the 21st Century is evidently written for teens with questions about the LGBT lifestyle. Like Dating and Relationships, it begins with a chapter that tackles difficult issues straight on, entitled "The Myth of Manliness." It goes on to discuss depictions of men in the media, double standards for boys and girls, and the LBGT lifestyle. The other two volumes approach their topics with the modernity necessary for any reader to give these books the time of day, and include sections on life in the digital environment as well as the analog one. The difficulty with launching such a series is how to deliver essential, life-changing content in book form that no young man wants to be seen reading? The format—text surrounded by stagey photos—makes for an uphill battle. The content is solid, however. If the need to get a teen to slide one of these surreptitiously in a backpack arises, these will be books an adult will want to have on hand.
