Editorial Reviews

VOYA
The Perspectives on Healthy Sexuality series gives students basic information and guidelines for making decisions about their sexuality. In Dating and Sex, Peacock defines a healthy dating relationship, describes the challenges teens face in dating and deciding whether or not to have sex, and offers help on how to handle breaking up. Through questions and nonjudgmental advice, she helps readers understand a relationship and if it is right for them. In Abstinence she defines the concept, discusses the benefits and challenges relating to abstinence, explains how to be abstinent, offers help on how to say no to sexual pressure, and advises how to be intimate without intercourse. Peacock fully explores the meaning of abstinence, not only for those who have never had sex but also for those who choose to stop having sex. Each slim title includes an overview at the beginning of every chapter, points to consider at the end of each chapter, quotes from teens dealing with the issues discussed, and questions to guide teens in their decision making. Throughout the books are facts and quotes in the upper margins to supplement what is in the main text. Color photographs of teens and young couples illustrate each chapter. Both heterosexual and homosexual relationships are mentioned without bias. Lists of useful addresses and Web sites are included. In providing general overviews of topics relating to sexuality in this series, there is not much depth, and some of the information, especially that on birth control methods, could be more complete. The material presented would be a good starting point for discussions on issues of sexuality, but more complete information should also be made available. Thequestions and quizzes will be helpful to those struggling with making decisions about their own sexuality. The author's acceptance of all types of relationships will be reassuring to teens. This series for hi/lo readers is recommended as an additional purchase. Glossary. Index. Photos. Further Reading. Teens and the adults who nurture them will find this a welcome discussion about relationships and dating. Deciding what is a dating relationship and then defining what is a healthy, dating relationship begins to set the boundaries for adolescent behavior. Each chapter has an overview and personal notes from teens as to their opinion and experience with each phase of a healthy, dating relationship. There are "Fast Facts" and "Points to Consider" at the end of each chapter for conversations among teens, their peers and/or their adult friends. There is an open and honest discussion about gay and lesbian relationships and about homosexuality. A unique feature of this book is the emphasis on the importance of keeping your friends and interests even when the relationship becomes serious. Challenges to a dating relationship and problem solving are also included. This books brings the relationship full circle. Deciding about sex, contraceptives, abstinence and other concerns of intimacy are raised. A fresh perspective is brought about how to handle a breakup and how important it is to remain friends. The glossary, resource section, addresses and Internet sites will be useful to all readers. This is part of the "Perspectives on Healthy Sexuality" series. 2001, LifeMatters/Capstone Press, $23.93. Ages 15 to 18. Reviewer: Karen Werner

Gr 7 Up-Two straightforward titles that examine issues vital to teen sexuality. The first book touches on the reasons for using birth control; options, including abstinence, withdrawal, over-the-counter barrier methods, and prescription medicines; and how to get help in deciding which method will work best for the individual. A brief review of how conception and pregnancy occur is included as well as the pros and cons for each type of birth control. Dating and Sex considers what makes for a healthy dating relationship, how to develop relationship skills, when and how an individual or couple should make sexual decisions, and how to handle a breakup. Two sets of basic questions that will help readers decide if they are ready for a relationship and what their own personal boundaries will be within it are particularly helpful. Each section starts with a basic preview of information included and ends with interesting points to consider that are effective discussion starters. Both books address gay teens and incorporate their specific concerns into the main text without relegating the information to a separate chapter. Images of contemporary teens decorate the text but do little to reinforce or clarify the concepts introduced. The concise length prevents any topic from being explained in great detail, but despite this, readers will find the books accessible and informative.-Katie O'Dell, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
