Overview

Throughout the countless native communities of the Indonesian islands, the rumors and stories of the hostile Datoga tribe have existed for centuries. About how they defended their small island fiercely, not allowing any outsiders anywhere near their shores. There had, in fact, been many accounts of passing boats being hit with flaming arrows from the shoreline, an effective, stern warning from the natives to keep away from their island. No one understood why they were so guarded and what could be so precious that would warrant defense in such a vehement manner. Some have suggested a "lake of gold riches" located deep in the inland jungles. Others have spoken of a mysterious "cloudless thunder", an ancient force with the power to wake the dead. But no visitors to the island have ever come into contact with the tribe and lived to tell about it. All rumors are exactly that: just rumors. In the mid-1960s after intense pressure from fishermen, tour companies, and researchers, the! government sent exploratory troops to the island. A bloody confrontation with the natives ensued and the tribe was driven deep into the jungle, never to be heard from again. The government stated that they had been wiped out. The island was declared off limits except for a small camp of a government sponsored research project kept under tight watch and guard. It was deemed safe for tourist and fishing boats to circle, but not land on the island. And just like that, the hostile incidents stopped. No reports of any confrontations have surfaced for the better part of three decades, a definitive statistic of permanent victory in the government's eyes.

So when the Norttcell Company of New York City inquired about the possibility of organizing their annually sponsored off-road jungle race on the untamed, rain forest location of Datoga Island, the government did not deliberate for very long before accepting the large chunk of money offered by the communications giant. It was only when two of the racers went missing without a trace did the trouble begin.

This was the book that got me to enjoy reading back in the day. This was also my first Chetan Dave, and I have to say I enjoyed it to the fullest. Easy to read adventure novel. Datoga Island, by prolific author Chetan Dave', combines action, adventure, mystery, suspense and some romance. The result is a spectacular book - as usual for Dave. I was hooked within the first few chapters and I finished the book in short order. I recommend it highly.

This book was a total thrill ride. The pace is great and the plot twists are mind boggling. You never can guess what will happen next. The ending is great and leaves the reader stunned and then satisfied. Extremely well written, props to the author, it's a real gem.

The suspense builds with each passing chapter leaving the reader wanting to know what happens next. The interaction between the characters is crisply laid out while the fascinating rain forest descriptions help to build the ominous environs. Mind boggling plot twists with a very unique ending. The author has created a thrilling masterpiece! From the opening pages the story takes off and never lets up. The jungle race is going fine until two of the racers curiously disappear. The plot that unfolds after that is absolutely mesmerizing. What I liked most was that Dave was able to cleverly place several surprising plot twists that lead up to the final mind blowing surprise that is clearly one of the most original ending concepts we have seen in years! Drama and adventure await you on Datoga Island. Very original, nice to see something fresh like this. Recommended for readers of all ages. Must read for everyone!!!!!

Impossible to put down! And the ending is just unbelievable! Loved it! The jungle race sets the stage for an awesome, very original plot. Like nothing I've ever read before. You just never know what's lurking around the next turn. Author does a good job of handling some deep moral issues while keeping the story moving at breakneck pace. But what really got me was the ending. No way you can guess how all this turns out. Written to reach a varied reader audience. Strongly recommend it! 5 Stars!!!

Just another island adventure story right? Wrong. This is one of the most original island adventures to come around in a long time. Don't want to give too much away but the backdrop of a road rally race only hints at the adventures yet to come. Best part is, you can never predict what's going to happen next. Great for a fast, entertaining read. Outstanding! 5 stars easy.

Great plot, totally engrossing. Keeps you wanting to find out what's on the next page. It starts out as an off road jungle race but thats only the start. The real adventure unfolds dramatically and you have a little romance thrown in there too. Definitely a must read for anyone young and old. Dramatic enough for adults, adventurous and clean enough for the kids. A rare find! Definitely recommend it!
