A hunted man accused of murder witnesses a cattle stampede which results in the death of a herder, and seizes the opportunity to assume the dead man's identity.

William MacLeod Raine (1871-1954) was born in England and grew up on a cattle ranch on the Texas-Arkansas border, spent time with the Arizona Rangers, worked as a journalist in Denver, and eventually settled down to write westerns. He often produced two books a year and was active until his death in 1954.
