All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Everything that made Chris Daughtry insufferable as a contestant on American Idol -- his utter lack of humor, his oppressive earnestness, his desire to sing every song in the same gut-wrenching fashion, a style that only suited the post-grunge brooding that is his chosen specialty -- work for him on his post-Idol debut album, Daughtry. Technically, this is not a solo album, it's the debut of a band called Daughtry, which is actually spelled all in capital letters, which could be seen as a sign that Chris Daughtry might have a bit of a credibility complex. It certainly seems as if he thinks he'll only be taken seriously as part of a band that, like lots of bands from the grunge revolution, is spelled in a specific, exacting way, even if it means that by the rules of the internet he is, quite literally, shouting at us -- which is only appropriate for a singer who is fueled by Fuel and lives by Live. And, let's face facts, DAUGHTRY was formed by Daughtry not only after his run on American Idol, but after he recorded this debut album: the band is for show, to prove that he's the real deal, baby, not some pansy TV singer. It's a posture that's not only just a teeny bit defensive, but one that's utterly unnecessary because the album DAUGHTRY is actually very good, whether it's judged by the standards of American Idol or by the standards of Fuel or Nickelback. Compared to Fuel -- the band that invited Daughtry to be their frontman after he was voted off Idol -- Daughtry has a lighter touch not just in his delivery but also in his songs, which are far hookier than most post-grunge; and if he's compared to Nickelback, he's a far more appealing frontman than that lunkhead Chad Kroeger, with a greater vocal range and far more sensitivity in his singing. Daughtry's way with a hook and empathetic emoting are placed far up in the unapologetically professional mix on DAUGHTRY, which is designed to cross over not to the pop market -- everybody involved knew that DAUGHTRY had that anyway thanks to Daughtry's TV celebrity -- but to the rock market, so everybody involved made sure not to temper the guitars with layers of synths or even to indulge in too many power ballads. The resulting album may play strictly by the rules of mainstream post-grunge and it may never achieve the sweat and grit that real rock bands do even after they've been cleaned up in the studio, but it follows the modern rock blueprint exceedingly well, creating drama even in its pedestrian moments. It also helps that the songs are sturdier than most post-grunge, with big, anthemic hooks on the choruses and verses that are lively enough not to bore. In short, it sounds like the work of a bunch of professionals, which is true to a certain extent: it was produced by Howard Benson, best-known for LPs by My Chemical Romance and All-American Rejects, but Benson and DAUGHTRY didn't draft in a bunch of pros to write the songs -- each tune bears a writing credit by Daughtry, and most of them are solo credits. Listening to these songs, it would be easy to mistake them for the work of seasoned pros: they not only follow the template of post-grunge well, they do it with better hooks and a commercial flair lacking from bands like Fuel and Shinedown, bands that have inspired Daughtry but who he betters here. To put it mildly, that's a surprise -- not just that Daughtry pulled off the tricky move of being pop enough for his Idol fans and rock enough for post-grungers, but that he pulled it off on the strength of his own work. While he hasn't shaken off all the problems that plagued him on the show -- he still could learn that a sense of humor helps add depth to his music, or at least he could realize that rock & roll should be fun at least some of the time -- but he's made those qualities work on a debut that's not only a lot more credible than any American Idol-affiliated rock album should be, but it's a lot easier to digest than most of its ilk.

    PLEASE REMOVE EXPLICIT LYRICS!!!!

certainly, this must be a mistake...anyone who has ever listened to this c.d, knows it is in no way, shape or form offensive...please remove this label!!! this album is appropriate for all ages, and doesn't even IMPLY anything which could be construed as offensive...for the potential buyers who may let this explicit lyric label deter you, please reconsider..you'd be missing out on the most enjoyable album to be released in a long time...it's good clean rock, with meaningful, catchy songs, that you'll not soon forget!

Not Great Out of the Gate

Overall I think this is a very forgettable first effort by Chris. Songs are predictable (start soft - build - bring back down for 2nd verse - then explode). Everything's a formula. His vocals are top notch, but the songs just don't give him much to work with. Pass on this one and get his second CD. That one's not-to-be-missed.

    Daughtry

I so enjoyed watching Chris on American Idol and was terribly diappointed he did not win. But this album makes up for everything. It is my all time favorite album and I have been buying records since the Sixties. His voice is so sensual and sexy. The music is very fine, also. I don't have the technical expertise of other reviewers or the musical backround but I love this album. The louder it is played, the better!

    Great CD

Very enjoyable to listen to in the car. Even some roofers working on a house down the street were listening to one of the tunes from this CD. I don't buy many rock CD's, but after hearing Daughtry sing on American Idol, and hearing the CD at the store, I had to buy it, and I'm glad I did.

I finally bought it, and I have no regrets...

Daughtry is fabulous here. I can only hope that the next album spares him the sophomore slump and goes on to do even better. This is an album that spans every possible aspect of rock that can be covered. Amazing album, overall.

    Unbelievable, dynamic rock album!

I still like Daughtry's album! Chris Daughtry has succeeded very well on his own with this album! Every song is dynamic on its own strength with solid, melodic grooves and landscapes. Home, It's Not Over, Feels Like Tonight and Over You have been hits, but I love Crashed and its charging guitars. I actually like the very adventurous Breakdown. You don't feel like you're sitting at home in your stereo hearing that song you feel like you're driving on a winding road in the mountains. That's just the vibe I get out of that somg. And yes, Daughtry and his band have been compared to Nickelback in terms of their sounds. Chad Kroeger, Nickelback's lead singer, could scream to do these songs, but these are Chris' and he wrote most of the songs. For most of 2006-2007, Daughtry was heavily compared to Nickelback. But the band's songs sound good on their own merits, solid post grunge rock that outdoes Fuel's latest effort by miles! And vocally, Chris sounds great, one moment emotional, one moment no-nonsense outrageous on these songs, with infectiously catchy choruses. This album has done unbelievable sales wise the past 2 years or so!

    cool rock songs

Chris has done well musically with his first CD Daughtry. I enjoy most of his songs. The tunes are catchy and well written. Sounds like he has put his heart and soul into his music and it shows!

    Explicit lyrics?

I am in shock that this album has been slapped with the explicit lyrics tag. My KIDS ages 3 and 6 listen to this CD all of the time! And believe me, I've known every word for months now - and there is NOTHING that I would consider explicit on this album. And why the tag now? This album was released 8 months ago! Hmmm, something STINKS!!!

    Daughtry's album contains clean lyrics

The Lyrics are clean I purchased Daughtry's CD the first day it came out. I love it and listen to it everyday, along with my children. There are no explicit lyrics and the album sends a positive message. Chris Daughtry has built a reputation as a man who puts God and his family first in his life. His album reflects the kind of person he is. "I'm going Home. Back to the place where I belong. Where your love has always been enough for me."~Lori~

Great Artist , He is a great find

Chris is a great find in the music industry, I would listen to any music he sells as he has great talent, which is some what hard to find now in the music industry. Watching Daughtry on American Idol I knew he would rise to great success and this CD is proof of it. MONIQUE MINNIS NASSAU, BAHAMAS

    Explicit Lyrics?

I've been listening to this phenomenal CD since it came out in November and I've never heard an "explicit lyric" on it anywhere. I'm not sure exactly why it has this label, but it needs to come off! Daughtry's music is universal and can (and should!) be listened to by everyone, even children. Chris's powerful and emotional voice along with the amazing lyrics and music make this one of the best CDs I've ever heard. It's pure magic. I've listened to it just about every day (sometimes several times a day) since it came out in November and I simply cannot get sick of it. Every single song is fantastic!

I love watching AI and I was so upset when Chris didn't win. It should have been between Chris and Elliot Yamin. They are the best. I LOVE Chris DAUGHTRY! This boy can sing! He ROCKS on this cd. People of all colors and races are talking to me about his CD and I totally support him. BUY IT! It's not a waste of money at all. He's good looking and has pipes! I hope he wins an Award or two. GO CHRIS! And Buy Elliot Yamin's Cd as well. Both are awesome CDs.

    DAUGHTRY Is Just Hawt!

I have to listen to DAUGHTRY every single day from the moment I get up. I have an inner competition that goes on about which of three songs on the album I like the best because each of these three release different depths of emotions from me: HOME, IT'S NOT OVER, AND OVER YOU. This REVIEWER is HUMOROUS to the point of being RIDICULOUS in saying Chris doesn't have a sense of humor. One of the things that makes him so loved by all his fans is that he is "ALL MAN'!...and SURVEY SAYS: WOMEN CHOOSE A MAN WITH A SENSE OF HUMOR ABOVE ALL ELSE!! We have seen his silliness, his warm sensitivity, gracious mannerisms, and family loyalty are all the things we love so much about this amazing man with these amazing vocals...HE IS JUST HAWT!! AND He DOES HAVE A WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR!!!
