Children's Literature - Paula McMillenThis is one of a substantial series of book in the "Children's Authors Series" that includes some of the heavy hitters in children's literature. Dav Pilkey has authored several children's series, the most notable being the "Captain Underpants" books, which have also been made into animated movies. Born Dave Pilkey in 1966, the unusual spelling of his name arises from the malfunction of a name tag labeller at the Pizza Hut where he worked in high schooland he kept it. As a kid, he spent a lot of time in the hallway for acting out in class; he thought everything was funny, including his teacher's mention of the word "underpants." He spent this time, and his free time out of school, drawing and, although his teachers ripped up his drawings and discouraged his art, Dav went on to become an art major at Kent State University. Dav was also a good writer and published his first manuscript in college, going on to write books for all ages of children and to win a Caldecott Honor in 1997. The production values of this volume are good; challenging vocabulary words are in bold within the text and defined in a two-page glossary. Color photos of Dav, places from his past, and his books are interspersed throughout. A table of contents precedes the short text, and an index follows. The publishing company asks the reader to come to their site to find additional web information but it would just have been easier to put the author's web site address. This book provides a nice overview of a popular author for school or public libraries. Reviewer: Paula McMillen, Ph.D.
