As a long-time fan of the Dave Matthews Band (DMB), a musical group that crosses boundaries between funk, blues, rock, and world music, this reviewer found answers in Delancey's book to questions she would not have thought to ask and learned a vast amount of detailed information about the band's history. Considered the authoritative research work on DMB, the first edition (1997) won acclaim for its thorough investigation of previously printed material about the group. Both the first and second editions, however, include no original interviews with band members, giving it a dry, essay-like feel. Delancey follows the band's development chronologically in an informative, if impersonal, style. The book is a fine example of research, including a fifteen-page bibliography as well as numerous color photos. Providing a more personal view are two articles included in their entirety at the end of the book—one a 1996 Rolling Stone article and the other a 1993 chronicle of the band's tour reprinted from C-VILLE Weekly, an arts and news tabloid published in Charlottesville, Virginia, the birthplace of the band. Dedicated fans will appreciate the book, as it focuses on specific details about the songs, the creation of the band, and the subsequent ups and downs of the members' years together rather than on anecdotes and insider views. Delancey is clearly a true admirer and biographer, as demonstrated by her desire to portray DMB accurately, albeit from a removed perspective. This book is recommended for purchase for libraries serving high school students. Index. Photos. Biblio.
