David Allan Coe Presents Patsy Cline

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
Here is a set of recordings by Patsy Cline that offers a portrait of the legendary singer as a honky tonk singer as well as a creation of Owen Bradley's studio magic. It's also a very personal compilation in the sense that David Allan Coe, co-owner and creative director of Coe Pop Records, handpicked this collection based on his own sense of what Cline's finest recordings were, which leaves a lot of classics off the set -- thank goodness, those are available in countless places. For one, "Walking After Midnight," while it does appear, is the very last track. "Crazy" is nowhere present, though the criminally ignored "Crazy Dreams" is. In addition, "I Cried All the Way to the ...

In addition, "I Cried All the Way to the Altar," "A Church, a Courtroom and Then Goodbye," "I'm Blue Again," "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down," "Hungry for Love," and "Walking Dreams" are, along with a couple others. Coe focused on Cline not as pop torch singer, but as country honky tonk torch singer on this set, and it feels seamless in its presentation. In addition, all of these tracks are completely remastered and sound better than they did on the MCA box set from the 1990s. One listen to the bluesed-out "Hungry for Love," which borders on rockabilly with its backbeat, is reason enough to own this CD. Cline growls, wails, and nearly moans the lyrics, pushing herself so far inside the song that it threatens to implode before breaking out in the bridge. It feels like Gene Vincent singing country. And the jazzy "Then You'll Know" offers a view of Chet Artkins' countrypolitan before it ever articulated itself as such. And "Walking Dreams" is pure unadulterated rockabilly à la Wanda Jackson, complete with a doo wop chorus. This is a smoking set, guaranteed to become a conversation piece at any gathering, but more importantly to provide a much more mysterious and multidimensional portrait of a legend whose claim to fame -- with most pop fans -- is based on three sublime songs.
