Overview

David Blaine is one of the world's premiere magicians and escape artists. He has survived being buried alive for an entire week, being frozen in a block of ice for 63 hours, and being submerged for seven days and seven nights. David has also dazzled both live and television audiences with his card tricks and other feats of prestidigitation, while also using his fame and his talents to give back to those in need.

Things haven't always been easy for this biracial achiever, though. The son of a father of Puerto Rican and Italian descent and a mother of Russian Jewish descent, David was raised in a single-parent family for much of his childhood. In this book, you'll learn how performing magic helped him deal with the early death of his mother, as well as how he overcame critics and hecklers during some of his recent feats of endurance. His story isn't just inspiring; it's downright magical!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Daley
David Blaine is a fascinating man whose many amazing feats have captivated audiences for years. One of his most recent stunts was filmed live on the Oprah Winfrey Show. For this event David broke a world record by holding his breath for over seventeen minutes. Prior to that David's other feats included being suspended over the River Thames in a Plexiglas cage for over forty days, standing on top of a narrow pillar for thirty-five hours, and being buried six feet underground in a clear coffin for seven days. David's mother was a Jew of Russian decent and his father was of Italian and Puerto Rican heritage. David's mother raised him and she encouraged his interest in magic and his admiration of famous magicians such as Harry Houdini. This interesting biography chronicles David's success as he gains more fame while performing increasingly daring and dangerous stunts. David Blaine is talented and inspiring and this book, which contains colorful subheadings, many photographs, and a detailed appendix, pays homage to his well deserved success. This book is part of the "Transcending Race in America: Biographies of Biracial Achievers" series. Reviewer: Denise Daley
