A real photographer's guide to using an advanced camera and not just a broad overview.

This book is different from other camera guides that I have seen or purchased. It focuses on how the photographer can get the most out of the camera. Since the Nikon D700 is a professional/advanced amatuer camera, the book doesn't waste the reader's time explaining basic, beginning photography. In spite of leaving that material out, the book is twice the size of the other D700 books that I have. Rather than a lot of filler material, is contains a massive amount of information about the camera including color illustrations of features, acessories, the camera's menu options and examples of photos using those options. It assumes that you know basic photography and quickly gets down to the business of teaching you how to use the D700 as a powerfull tool. It gets right into the technical guts of the camera, how it works, clearly explains the hundreds of features that come with the D700, discusses some little quirks that need to be understood and clearly explains what is different about this camera from other Nikon models. The author doesn't pull any punches, pointing out some of the things that could be better or cheaper but heaping praise on the camera for the most part. It's obvious that he is a photographer and not a Nikon salesman. I have two other D700 field guides as well as the instruction book that came with the camera. They all have been consigned to boxes in the basement while this book stays with me as a ready reference. Having used Nikon equipment since 1969 and this being my 6th Nikon camera, I wish there had been guide as good as this one in the past.

    500 pages of D700 information!

Busch knows what he's talking about! I purchased my D700 six months ago and have been struggling to learn all its features. The manual furnished with the camera is complete, but makes it almost impossible to find anything quickly. It has you jumping around from section to section to learn even simple functions. Then, I found this book, which is 1000 times better. The author gives you the basic information you need to use the camera in the first few chapters, and then refers you to later chapters for more detailed explanations. This is perfect for me. I don't get bogged down with technical details right off the bat, but I can jump ahead to a later chapter to read as much as I want. Autofocus has always mystified me, but I learned the options in the first part of the book, and then learned exactly how autofocus works in an entire chapter devoted just to that topic.

I am very visually oriented and find that I learn from books like this one, which have a great many large color illustrations much better than from other guides, which are laden with text and have only small pictures. This book should have been packaged with the camera. Are you listening, Nikon? If buyers like me can learn how to use their cameras more quickly with a well organized book like this one, we will be more likely to stick with your system!

    Excellent Detail & Content

David Busch has done an excellent job of detailing the Nikon D700. He has given more than just a list of camera settings; he has explained when and why the camera settings should be changed.

He has provided excellent photos to enhance his explanation. The book comes across very well in an ebook format.

The book gets a top recommendation and will be referenced often.
