    An Excellent Introduction to Harmonica

'Instant Blues Harmonica' is a great way for anyone, yes, I said anyone, to learn to play harmonica (including my dad, who had previously never read a note of music in his life. David Harp simplifies harmonica techniques so that they're easy to learn, and the illustrations and CD are very helpful. You don't even need to learn to read sheet music, with David Harp's 'HarpTab' notation system. You can learn to play a variety of different types of music, including folk songs, rock 'n roll, Chicago style blues, and boogie woogie blues. With a little practice, and a bit more than the 3 minutes advertised on the title, you really can learn to play blues and rock harmonica. However, as wonderful as the book is, I recommend purchasing the book with the CD and not the complete package which includes a harmonica. The harmonica that comes with the book is very low quality, and if you hold any part of it except the ends, it may squeak. I would recommend to anyone who really wants to learn harmonica that they should go to a music store and buy a $10-$20 harmonica. This will make it much easier to learn to play, since many of the techniques shown in the book cannot be done using the included harmonica without it making a high-pitched squeaking noise. It's entirely possible that the harmonica I got with the book was defective, but a slightly more expensive harmonica sounds much nicer anyway and is more enjoyable to play.
