David Pascucci Sings Previn & Previn

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Dave Nathan
Andre Previn is best known for his work as a jazz artist and as a conductor of major classical orchestras. But he was also one of a successful songwriting team with his extraordinarily talented wife, Dory Previn, a partnership which dissolved with their marriage in 1970. Cabaret performer David Pascucci has collected tunes from their two most successful and productive collaborations, the music for the 1965 film Inside Daisy Clover followed up by the score for Valley of the Dolls. Of the ten tunes on the CD, equally divided between the two films, two made the charts: "You're Gonna Hear From Me," a hit for Frank Sinatra, and "Theme From Valley of the Dolls," which was a Top ...

Of the ten tunes on the CD, equally divided between the two films, two made the charts: "You're Gonna Hear From Me," a hit for Frank Sinatra, and "Theme From Valley of the Dolls," which was a Top Ten for Dionne Warwick. But this album is a reminder that there are other good tunes from these two classic cult films. One of the tunes for Inside Daisy Clover, "A Happy Song," which Pascucci has included, is a lovely piece of tenderness which pretty much ended up on the cutting room floor. Other notable offerings include "Come Live With Me," done with a hint of a Latin beat, and a happy recollection of the joy when the circus comes to town described in "The Circus Is a Wacky World." The enthusiasm and vigor with which Pascucci addresses each tune is a clear indication that this album was a labor of love for him. Steven Applegate has provided arrangements and leads a full orchestra, both of which are suited to Pascucci's interpretive qualities. The problem with the CD is that it offers just a parsimonious 27 and a half minutes of music. It's really too bad, because more from David Pascucci needs to be heard.
