    Weak

This one is light; not for anyone who really likes western adventure. Lacks realism, historical research & plot; amateurish. Skip it.

Enjoyable reading! I wanna be a cowboy!

I've never really read westerns before, I've always read fantasy novels, but I wanted a change. The reason I chose this book was because the main character's name is the same as my nephew. A very good book, although I've never read the main character's name mentioned in one story as often as in this writing, it actually was annoying. And at times the story tends to jump from time or location from one sentence to the next, leaving the reader wondering what happened in between. The story is great! I like how it is woven in to real places and events in time, places that I've even been. This character, Nathan Stone, is the kind of person that we all look up to and kinda wish we could fill those same boots. I was left thinking that if there really were a Nathan Stone, we sure could use a lot more of him today. This is a good book in the beginning of this series. I think that it is a little slow throughout though, but once you start into book two, 'The Killing Season', it is like hitting the Nitro on a drag car!!! From book two on, I've really enjoyed these books. I'm currently into book 5, 'Sixguns and Double Eagles', and am much looking forward to book 6, 'Train to Durango'. I highly recommend this series by Ralph Compton, it's worth the time!! I've never read Louis L'Amour, and I don't know that I ever will. I've never been a big fan of dominance, which Louis exudes. I've always been a fan of the underdog, and firmly believe that 'every dog has his day.' It's Ralph's day with me! Sorry Louis, no biscuit for you. My final thought, I wish that these characters could keep only 1 lover in their life that wouldn't die!

The Trail Of Vegence Starts With the First Step

I had never given much thought to westerns before, but I was looking for something different and came across this book. What a book to start reading a genre with! This is much more than a story of vegence, it is a book that weaves fact and fiction in a tale that will hook you with the first sentence.

Go for your Guns what a book!

You'll smell the powder burnin'. I struggled to find a western writer to even come close to Larry McMurtrey and his Lonesome Dove series. This gunfighter series and the trail drive series is realistic and very well written and researched. Nathan Stone is not just a dime store character who shoots anyone who looks at him cross ways. A very developed character who reminds me of Josey Wales. I highly recommend it!

    'Can't put it down' book

If you didn't know this book was fiction, you'd think Nathan really did live. This book was a great book. I couldn't put it down. I read it in an entire night.

One of the best books ever

This book was great. The character in it (Nathan Stone) is the kind of guy you would like to believe you would be. It is based in the old west and is hard for me to describe, it is a must read!
