Overview

Like others in this series of "day-by-day" references suitable for college and public libraries serving a general readership, this two- volume work comprises a continuous 10-column chart showing day-by-day events in these categories: world affairs; Europe; Africa & the Middle East; The Americas; Asia & the Pacific; US politics and social issues; US foreign policy and defense; US economy & environment; science, technology, & nature; and culture, leisure, & lifestyle. The decade and each year under review are introduced in overview essays. Most of the material is drawn from the Facts on File News Service's World News Digest, supplemented by major newspapers and scholarly reference works. The emphasis is on events of public record reported in the news media. Name and subject indexes occupy about 200 pages of the second volume. A useful list of acronyms is included. Library Journal
This newest addition to Facts On File's popular "Day by Day" series (which covers every decade from the Forties on) follows noteworthy events and achievements of the last decade here and abroad. Compiled from World News Digest and supplemented by major newspapers and scholarly reference works, this set is designed to help researchers compare simultaneous developments around the world. These developments include, for example, the bombing of the Federal Building, Supreme Court rulings, major scientific breakthroughs such as the discovery of frozen mummies in northern Argentina, and Dolly the cloned sheep. Each volume contains an introduction, an index, and a chronology of each day's events arranged in columns under ten subject headings that include world affairs, geographic areas, U.S. and foreign policies, science and technology, culture, and leisure and lifestyles. Bottom Line Researchers may need to seek additional reference resources for more in-depth coverage of each topic, but, overall, this far-reaching reference will prove to be a great starting point for history and trivia buffs. Essential for high school and public libraries. Bobbie Wrinkle, McCracken Cty. P.L., Paducah, KY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
