What a fantastic find for anyone in a position of leadership seeking to set up an activity program for children in grades one through six! The author has extensive experience in Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs, and she has presented a master plan for any adult who endeavors to set up an educational and fun filled program for children.
While this book revolves around the theme of Hawaii and was set up for cub scouts, the format can be adapted to vacation Bible school programs, summer school, or an after-school center. The author divides activities and crafts into two levels grades 1-3 snd grades 4-6 according to complexity and skill set. She takes you through the process of development from beginning to end. The reader will learn how to choose a theme, find the appropriate ideas, and then set up and organize it. Sample charts are included to record the individual progress for each child as well as rewards and badges. She recommends computer software and provides the names of retailers who will supply materials. Paula gives patterns for making crafts and a guide to learning some sign language. The reader will find a myriad of poems, songs, cheers and skits that will appeal to the children. There are sports games and motor activities as well as traditional camp pursuits like swimming and camping. As for practical concerns, she even provides a first aid supply list as well as rules and discipline codes.
Anyone charged with the task of setting up an organized program for children knows how much planning and organization goes into the task before the program begins. While this book's title might appear very specific, it can very easily be adapted to most any theme and program focus. This guide affords the organizer a goldmine of resources and will save her a huge amount of time and effort. Highly recommended!
