PreS-Gr 1-- Anna brings along her teddy bear for company during her first day of day care, and through him, expresses her own ambiguity about being at the center and taking part in its many activities. By the end of the day, Anna is comfortable and happy and does not want to leave when her father comes to pick her up. Although this book is well intentioned, the writing and illustrations are disappointing. The language is trite, with short, choppy sentences that are difficult to read aloud. The pictures are unoriginal and inconsistent (some pages have a gimmicky teddy bear border, some do not). One particularly offensive scene shows a small boy going down a slide, on his back and head first, with his teacher laughing at his antics. Gunilla Wolde's Betsy's First Day at Nursery School (Random, 1982) is a much better book.-- Cathleen Towey, Nassau Lib . System, Uniondale, NY
