from Day Hikes Around Los Angeles...
Hike 106—Echo Mountain via Sam Merrill Trail: Echo Mountain, jutting southward between Las Flores Canyon and Rubio Canyon, is a 3,250-foot promontory overlooking the city of Altadena. The site atop Echo Mountain is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was the location of White City, an active mountaintop resort from 1893 through 1936. The ruins of White City still remain, creating a museum-like atmosphere. Atop the promontory are rock foundations, old retaining walls, rusting Pacific Electric railroad parts, iron tracks, abandoned gears, and ballwheels. Interpretive panels with historic photos are mounted in the exact spot they were originally taken. The Mount Lowe Railway shuttled guests seven miles and 1,300 feet up Rubio Canyon, from Altadena to the top of the Echo Mountain promontory. For four decades, the tourist attraction thrived. In 1900, a fire destroyed the Echo Mountain House. Another fire and a windstorm in 1905 burned additional structures and the trestles. In the late 1930s, flash floods and gale force winds wiped out the remaining buildings. The railway was abandoned in 1938.
